US Right and Left join forces to condemn Canadian-US border plans

Once again, both sides on the US idealogical divide join forces to denounce the stupid US border policies with regards to Canada. Like I've been saying all along - sheer stupidity! Finally, Americans of all political stripes are coming to the same conclusion. What took you so long??????????????????????!!!!!!!!!! Americans deserve to feel ashamed at how their government has treated Canadians and indeed their own citizens. With friends like this who needs enemies?

Groups blast U.S. border-travel plans
ALAN FREEMAN

From Friday's Globe and Mail

WASHINGTON — Two organizations from opposite sides of America's ideological divide united yesterday to condemn U.S. government plans to require a passport or similar ID for cross-border travel from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

"There's a mess here in our border security," said Jim Harper, director of information policy studies at the Cato Institute, a conservative think tank. He said Congress was stampeded into approving the passport requirement in the mistaken belief that it would stop further Sept. 11-like terrorist attacks.

Mr. Harper said that the passport requirement, which will be phased in next year, is "a collective overreaction to the terrorist threat" that would not add to U.S. security while attacking individual privacy rights.

Joining him at a news conference was Tim Sparapani, legislative counsel with the American Civil Liberties Union, a liberal group usually at loggerheads with the Cato Institute.

Mr. Sparapani said the passport law will only "give an illusion of security," and will in fact undermine the privacy of law-abiding citizens and increase identity theft. He said requiring a passport or similar ID will increase the number of incidents in which minorities are singled out for extra inspections while not stopping criminals from slipping across the border.

"Terrorists, smugglers and undocumented immigrants could still find ways to enter the country or obtain false documents," he said.

The news conference was organized by the non-governmental organization Citizens Against Government Waste, which published a report blasting the measure as potentially costing billions of dollars while the benefits are questionable.

"People and commerce should be allowed to flow freely without burdening taxpayers and leaving Americans vulnerable to a potential invasion of privacy," concludes the report, which suggests there is no need to change the current system in which travellers are required only to provide driver's licences and birth certificates to prove identity.

One conservative think tank and one liberal special interest group. Hardly Americans of all stripes. I am still waiting for baileys explanation of how he came to the conclusion that the mayor of Detroit represents a majority on this issue.

I just love watching bailey go through kinipchen fits over this issue.

A) You obviously don't travel much. I do.

B) If you don't care about the serious erosion in your civil rights in the US then you can hardly call yourself a defender of freedom. Are you as hypocritical as your President in this regard? I hope not. Otherwise you get the government you deserve obviously.

C) I wonder if you would have adopted the same attitude when blacks were being denied their civil rights in the 60's?

D) To paraphrase Margaret Mead (an American I admire I might add), the only thing that has EVER changed the world is a small group of people committed to a cause.

E) Evil grows when good men stand by and do NOTHING.

Get it?!

I love watching you lie and distort what others have posted because it's so obvious to anyone with a brain what you are up to. You can't help yourself and you end up looking completely ridiculous. Then again, like Hitler, I suppose you subscribe to the line of thought that if you tell a big enough lie people will believe it. If you don't think that way then I suggest that you change your odious tactics in a hurry. Your ball of confusion, not mine.

I have posted SO MANY links to a wide variety of American politicians and business leaders who are against this idiotic border policy. Are you blind as well? At least make a pretence of reading and try not to be appear so obviously oblivious (don't get stuck on the alliteration). Learn to spell as well as there is no such word as "kinipchen ". Don't expect me to spell the correct word for you either as your weak spelling is pure laziness on your part and I'm certainly not going to encourage it. Undoubtedly, you are a product of the US educational system. One can tell.

Perhaps you have taken some selected Americans that are against the policy, but hell I can find some Americans that don't like mom, apple pie or the girl next door but that doesn't make them the majority. So again tell me how you came to the conclusion that the the mayor of one city in the US is reflective of the majority? Furthermore since clearly your ideas are bereft of any real value all that is left for you is to criticize my spelling. Well done little man well done.

bailey do you ever wonder why I am the only one to bother responding to your border posts for the most part, and clearly I only do it for the sport of it. No one cares except Canadians and a few, I mean very few, Americans.

Well that's your shame as a nation then isn't it. No wonder that Canada-US relations are so poor. We are well-informed in Canada about the US and issues that affect us. Your country isn't. You've admitted it and that's the reason why Canadians have a right to feel smug about Americans. Your country's ignorance of its biggest ally (you think the Aussies and Brits like Yanks?....check the opinion polls) and biggest trading partner is at the root of most of the problems that bedevil the relationship. That's something Americans should be ashamed of and they shouldn't be suprised when we say screw you as a result. Instead of attacking me why don't you do something constructive about an obvious defect of the US populace?
