Matt, your post hasn't been factual since 1988. The Castro regime (unlike that in Iran and a few other places) no longer gives a rat's a$$ if a Cuban citizen leaves. The only remaining obstacle is getting someone else to let the person in.

Of course, we can't expect insular conservatives to understand such complexities...
Do you have a source for that? Im genuinely curious. Everything i'm able to locate in a quick cursory check indicates that the government of Cuba still frowns upon emigration.

Re: How Cuba helps discriminated young Americans

I found this...

Quote:
- Legal emigration: During the last forty years close to 900,000 people migrated legally to different countries. It is estimated that around 130,000 Cubans live in Latin America (in Venezuela, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Argentina and Chile); approximately 37,000 reside in Europe (mostly Spain, Italy and Germany) and more than 1,000 in the rest of the world, for example, Canada and some of the former socialist Eastern European countries such as Russia.

- Illegal emigration: These flows target mainly the U.S., including the Guantanamo Naval Base, the Great Caiman Islands, the Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic, among other countries. From 1985 to the signing of the 1994 Migration Agreements, the number of illegal emigrants reached 82,500, including both successful and failed emigration attempts. From 1994 up to the mid-2000 a total of 7,500 Cubans arrived in the U.S., including those who were intercepted by the U.S. Coastguard and returned to Cuba under the Migration Agreements. Following 1994 legal Cuban migration flows tend to stabilize, as did restrictions to illegal entries through the coast. However, Cubans continued to enter the U.S. through other routes, including the smuggling of people.

Sorry, I generally don't read the rest of a post that starts off with childish name calling.

Did you have a point?

Heh Heh - how many Americans refer their friends as "refugees" - not a word commonly used or for that matter in our TV land culture - even known.

Re: How Cuba helps discriminated young Americans

...when it comes to Cuba some here can only repeat "boat people" like a zen mantra....well, the biggest group inmigrating to the US comes from capitalist Mexico,El Salvador and central america, Haiti (boat people too!) and Dominican Republic..not from Cuba......sorry to pop the party balloon....and these countries like Mexico do not have a permanent US cia radio station like radio-marti http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5329394.stm broadcasting 24/7 from key west telling them how to build a boat with wood , old michellin tires and dry palm leaves "boat for dummies", how to navigate " do it yourself navigation" and telling every woman that they will be the next gloria estefan and every man the next Canseco....give me a break!..and i'm not saying Cuba is paradise but sure is hell better than most countries in central america including mexico...

Not one that I have any intention of repeating. Unless, of course, you're willing to repost everything of yours that has the word "liberal" in the first sentence.

Re: How Cuba helps discriminated young Americans

The following facts are undeniable:

-The black and Latino population in America is discriminated, oppressed and considered as second class citizens.

-Much higher percentage of Black and Latino people are imprisoned and killed in American Jails ( then white Anglo population )

-Americans don’t have enough intellectual capacity to distinguish CIA and Bushes propaganda from the real life around them. The voice of few remained intellectuals can not be heard because majority of American people are hypnotized and overwhelmed by materialism, social Darwinism and cruel inhuman capitalism that make them incapacitated to communicate with the rest of the world in the manner of civilized people. Even if you are considered as a winner, It is not necessary to oppress and kill people to feel safe, you also can talk to them with minimum mutual respect.

What other countries ( out of USA ) say about Cuba ?

According to UNICEF, last year Cuba had a lower infant mortality rate than the United States

For almost half a century Cuba has endured crippling sanctions imposed by its near neighbour the United States. But this tiny Caribbean nation has not only survived but achieved the unthinkable. It has had made major medical breakthroughs and now has a medical report card that is the envy of its most of its neighbours.

Last year, Cuba's infant mortality rate declined even further. It now equals many developed nations but has surpassed that of the United States.

America, the largest medical market in the world, has responded, by accusing Cuba of trying to make money out of medicine. Health and medicine are indeed big business in Cuba. This year, monies raised from health tourism and from its biotechnology breakthroughs look set to surpass Cuba's traditional economic mainstay which has been tourism.

But Cuba's medical miracles are not confined to homeshores. A legion of medical missionaries have been sent to work overseas and the United States is concerned what impact that is having on the region.

Laca, this is the first time I have responded to your posts. Actually, I have never agreed with the Treatment Cuba has gotten from the US so, to a large extent, I have agreed with you ----IN YOUR STARTING POSTS.

The problem is that you should have quit while you were ahead. You are rapidly losing your credibility.

You are definitely NOT good for Cuba

So how are you feeling about the veracity of his opening post now?
