After a lengthy absence I thought I would contribute this juicy and controversial topic of discussion for you fine folks...okay 'fine' may be overdoing it but feel free to discuss this controversial topic anyway.

The alleged victim of a violent gang rape has told police she does not want the case to proceed, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions says.

Adam Jade Pinner, the alleged leader of the rape, had faced a charge of aggravated sexual assault in company before the charge was dropped in Downing Centre Local Court today.

The ODPP today said the victim told police she did not intend to give evidence.

"The complainant indicated strongly to the police, ODPP officers and Witness Assistance Services officers that she did not want the case to proceed and that she did not intend to give evidence in the proceedings," the ODPP said in a statement.

She was alleged to have been raped for up to an hour on the evening of June 8, after she was lured into a public toilet near the Chinese Gardens, at Darling Harbour.

It seems to me that it's her perogative, whether I agree with her choice or not.

There is the possibility that she has been threatened into dropping the case. I am not saying that this is necessarily why the victim is dropping the case but perhaps she was threatened by serious retribution upon herself, her family, and her friends.

That's true. It would be very frightening to have to face a rapist in court. Rapists use threats. And this girl was raped by 4 rapists. Poor thing. I wish her well.

Am I missing something? What is "controversial" about this?

Not uncommon. The poor kid knows she will get smeared in the witness box despite the alleged protection afforded to victims who choose to give evidence.
