European complicity in CIA renditions ?

One of the questions discussed in Italy these days is if the former governement of prime minister Berlusconi knew about american plans to kidnap a muslim cleric on Italian soil and at least silently agreed and publicly condemned it. Also more information has hit the media about the CIA putting pressure on Germany to help quell citicism of "key allies in the war on terror"..

Consider how critical European nations and people generally are of the U.S's foreign policy (rightly so in my opinion) , I find it hypocritical that they would be so willing to help the U.S. in some of our shaddier dealings.

It is easy to criticize our policy in foreign lands, but when it comes to dealing with something in their own back yard we are welcomed and assisted.

Exactly its hypocrite. And because it is, our governments do their very best to hide it from public. They do their best that it will never become more than rumors.

One thing has to be clear. The governments, in case they openly helped you (what seems to be quite likely) did not only act fundamentally against the will of their own people, but also broke several important laws, if not the constitutions or human rights.

If any of the rumors can be proven governments will come into severe problems, some might even fall. Thats enough motivation to keep it all as dizzy as possible.

The sole actors that seem currently working against that, are on the one side the Council of Europe, which is a pretty powerless union when it comes to own investigations (and its main power lies within being the force behind the European Court of Human Rights) and on the other side the European Parliament. The latter is the one that brought constantly salt into the wounds of the national governments, even though it has not overly too many competences in investigation either. But it has allready brought the national governments into troubles only through showing that its them that effectively try to prevent an effective investigation. And you don't need to be rocket scientist to know why.

In the meanwhile those institutions continue to collect witness interviews, comments, explanations and legitimations from official side etc. And every few weeks a new detail comes to the ears of the public. Nothing proven, but factual evidences that make the governments looking even worse...

I demand that someone has to pay the bill for those unjustifiable crimes that have been committed with the knowledge and in some cases even with assistance of the European countries. And I am referring here to Europe not the US.

If you do not see any relevance in severe human rights violations committed by the US with what is very likely active help from Europe, then its sad. In case your attitude should be representative for the whole US it would be even extremely worrying.

Severe human rights violations committed by our own men? Who the fuck cares. ...

Thinking like that is disgusting.

And also note that some of the governements concerned publicly denounced the Bush administration and played the anti- Bush and "standing up to the cowboys card" to increase their popularity and secretly cooperated.....

Indeed. A bunch of hypocrites.
I really hope that they will get into real trouble due to this.
