Re: How world condemns USA embargo on CUBA

Does anyone have a good rebuttal for why a command economy cannot simply legislate its way to first world status?

I still think he is American. We do have immigrants from the US, you know. In fact, we probably have immigrants from just about every country on earth. We are a multi-cultural society. I haven't come across an Eskimo yet, but give it time!

As an aside, I'm amazed that this thread is now as long as it is! I still haven't seen a cogent argument as to why the US is keeping up its ban on Cuba.

Bitterness and revenge for the nationalization of American companies on Cuba.

Castro's Cuba has been long known to have machinated Terrorist training for Libyan and Palestinian hijackers, suicide bombers and more.

Quote:
The Training of Terrorist Organizations
CSC 1995

COMMUNIST MACHINATED TERRORIST TRAINING

Although terrorism originated centuries ago, modern international
terrorism orchestrated by the Soviet Union arguably began at the
Tricontinental Conference conceived by Moscow and conducted in
Havana, Cuba during January l966
The purpose of the conference
was to devise a "global revolutionary strategy to counter the global
strategy of American imperialism
."14 It resulted in the creation of an
African, Asian, and Latin American Solidarity Organization based in
Havana. The Conference also passed resolutions advocating outside
aid for groups fighting for "liberation". During late l966, the Cubans
opened a number of training camps for guerrilla fighters in Cuba that
were under Soviet supervision
. Palestinian groups began sending
students to these facilities on the "Isle of Pines" during l966, and
upon graduation, those students spawned the terrorist groups that
exploded in the Middle East during the l97O's.

Castro's terrorism schools were under the supervision of the
Direcion General de Intelegencia (DGI). Students were flown into the
country from connecting airports, or arrived in Cuban harbors by
boat. Upon debarkation in Havana, they were segregated by
nationality and moved to their individual training locations. The
guerrilla courses lasted from three to six months. Subject material
included "tactics, weapons training, bomb making- particularly how
to blow up oil pipelines, map reading, cryptography, photography,
falsification of documents, and disguise.
"
This is one reason why Castro is not considered to be an infidel. He is just Fidel to al Qaeda, Iran or Hezbollah. Castro is an ally of Terrorist mullahs.

Cuba should never have normalize relationships with the US and China's status should be reviewed.

Because Cuba's run by a Commie Pinko US hating dictator. Any more silly questions?

As opposed to the US-loving dicators? Not a cogent argument. Especially as you trade every day with people who don't like your form of government, or your government, come to that.

You know what the nice thing about "free trade"? We are free to trade with whomever the fuck we choose to trade with without having to worry about what people living in OZ think.

It has nothing to do with this, and the argument Enigma is looking for has been offered already. The embargo is kept for only one reason. Electoral politics. Florida is important in the national races, and the Cuban expat population there is an important part of Florida politics. It is as simple as that.

Thank you, Gort. I had forgotten that aspect of it. However, I do think that Wallaroo has also given a convincing explanation.

If yu remember, when the US recognised 'mainland' China, the rulers of Formosa (now Taiwan - although it seems to have changed its name again) were furious. But their anger didn't stop it going ahead. Although I do admit it isn't quite the same situation with those expats in Florida.

As an aside, back when Chaing Kai Chek was deposed by the people and fled to Formosa, the US soldiers set to guard Madame Chaing were not impressed that she clapped her hands together to summon them! A bit of trivia which stuck in my 'hard-drive'!

JP, I don't normally acknowledge unnecessarily rude and impolite remarks directed at me. Up until now you wouldn't have known that, so I am just letting you know.

really? how interesting. I guess that explains why he launched an attack on Australia a while back - although he seemed to be pretty ill informed about the current situation, and was relying mainly on information that was at least 20 years out of date.

And Enigma - if he learnt his English in the US/from an American he could make the same mistakes. I've seen similar things in the way some Koreans I know write.

His extremism makes me think he's a fraud - especially if he is an ex pat Cuban. I'm not saying those sentiments aren't alive and well in Cuba - but I think they would be relatively rare for Cubans outside their country. Most expats/refuseniks who have fled their countries of origin tend to be quite critical of the way things are back there - even though they may criticise the host country to the point where you feel like telling them to bloody well go home.

And I doubt there are many Cubans in Australia who have left their country on friendly terms.... if he's second generation ... it still doesn't really fit.

Excellent 'sleuthing', daisym. Even one of the 'opposite number' posters sent me a PM laughing at the fact that laca had stated that I was " CIA agent and FBI something or other". Talk about ironic!
