On the other hand, Bayrou had a very small program (3 Billion €); he was planning to reduce the size of the state, but also to let the people find a middle ground on each issue. I think that the reason why people voted for him is not so much his place on the political spectrum than his moderation. But it's very tempting to equate moderation with being at the center, especially when Bayrou is, indeed, at the center. But it would be possible to have a moderate communist or extreme right candidate: such candidates would say that they support their extreme ideologies, but would be planning to only act when a majority of the people support their actions rather than using their temporary authority.
What do you mean by further to the right? the PS moved to the right?

Sarkozy by talking of identite national is not getting his ideas from FN? For me that's clearly going to the extrem!

That's another good thing i like about Bayrou, is that his program is easily doable because it is not expensive, because he really care about the huge debt of France, as the other two, they don't really care and the prefer to buy people by promising them the moon, who is opportunist? (phrase hautement trollesque)

Things are not that simple
Of course things are not that simple, but that doesn't really care, what people bear in mind is the clichés, les raccourcis, et Sarkozy is known to take care of immigrants, and insecurity, the main concerns of FN

And, since Sarkozy is not afraid of being seen as FN sympatizor, he came up with the idea of identity national, what does FN have left? nothing! sarkozy just took all their theme de campagne, that's why FN just had 10% on the last election...

On the other hand, PS has always been seen as laxist towards immigrants and insecurity, that's a good cliches of the left, huh?

We don't have to make things looks complicated, because they are easy indeed!

Segolene definitely is on the right wing of the PS. Also, her comments regarding the treatment of criminality and thsoe regarding "identite national" also show a right-wing interest. I can't think of anything that would make her any more left-wing that Jospin, not to mention Mitterand.

As for Sarkozy, he did move further to the rights than his predecessor, so yes you could say he moved towards the extreme. However I wouldn't say he's anywhere as dangerous as a fascist such as Le Pen. Sarko isn't extreme, he is just... moving further to the right. IMHO.

That's not going to be trollesque to me, I voted Bayrou .

Re: Who do you support in the final round of the French presidential election?

I have completely changed my mind about Sarkozy.
he is not perfect but after a week in France (Strasbourg and seeing what seems to be normal "dans les cites ou banlieues" and even the city centre. Something has to change. I never knew things were this bad in France.
People don t seem to see there is something wrong with this kind of behaviour.
I was never so horrified or afraid in my life. My friends had rocks thrown at him and got cut badly on his shoulder. I got called a whore for wearing 3/4 length trousers with high heels. A couple had things thrown at them and abuse shouted at them.
There needs to some control in these areas. I never felt so unsafe and its a shame as Strasbourg is such a beautiful city.
I think I now can understand Sarkozy's and other peoples extreme reactions against these vandals. Its easy to judge from afar but when its right in your face you feel differently.
But what is the solution to this?

Yeah, thanks I know all about this, but if people voted for FN it is mainly because of insecurity and immigration problems, not because of their family program

Segolene on the right of the PS? I don't know... She wants Besancenot to participate in its debat participatif... pffff

It's like Sarkozy asking for Le Pen to help on immigration...

Re: Who do you support in the final round of the French presidential election?

Well, what is wrong in flirting with the extreme-left when the right is flirting with the extreme right (and it works!) ?

You may not like Besancenot and Bové, but it's better to have them with you than against you. They are part of the French political lanscape.

Of course, it's tactical, not ideological. But the only chance for SG to make it to the presidence is to federate the left, including the extreme-left and the left of the center.

I also think that she is at the right of the Socialist Party - closer to a SK than to a Fabius.

Do you think Sarkozy is ?

He was four years long Ministre de l'Intérieur. Have things improved ? No.
On the contrary, he managed to get himself hated by all the young guies in the banlieues who felt provocked by his "straightforwardness".

He wants to unite the French, but not all of them unfortunately.

I am really not for "doing nothing" or cultivating the "victimization sydrom". But confrontation leads nowhere.

Of course it has improved ! what are you talking about ? you just talk about assault! and assault are about 10 % among all the criminality rate !

Thanks to the far left which has never stopped to try to manipulate them....

Sure, when you use some words as "racaille" and "karcher" it's shocking! but the problem is no one find very shocking the left change the meaning of these words to replace them in another context...

C'est pitoyable...

An you base your claim on what ?

who said he wanted a confrontation ? yes, the left. Actually the cops try to make their job, and it's harder eveyday because the young guy don't find another way than the criminality. That's a reality in the suburbs for 15 years (at least) and Sarkzo has little to do about that.

It's funny to think all the problems come from this guy ! what the left did ? almost nothing, on the contrary the criminality has never been so high when they ruled the country. That's the reality.

J'ai bien peur que nous ne soyons jamais d'accord sur ces questions sucre

No I don t think either candidates will provide a solution quickly. Whats the magical cure for this? But at least Sarkozy sees how bad it is. But what is his solution? good point.

Personaly I like Royale but I am against her basic ideas for France. I would agree more with Sarkozy economicly.

But Sarkozy was right about the people that do this when he calls them "la racaille". Its easy when you don t have face these problems I used to think he was extreme and a bigot but after my few days in Strasbourg I changed my mind. I now know why alot of French people think in a similar manner. I lived in Lorient for 1 year and I think I was very sheltered from the problems.

The more burning issue is WHY are these young Magreiban boys doing this? Can you really blame the government? I think this is really scary. If these boys are young teenagers - what on earth are things going to be like in a few years time. It can only get worse

I am from a country where immigration is new and is going relatively smoothly but we will wait another generation to see have our laissez faire methods worked. Has it worked in Britain and the US? Thats debatable.

I just don t want Ireland to end up like that. Prevention is better then cure. I don t want to live in a country where I would be afraid by certain people and places.

Re: Who do you support in the final round of the French presidential election?

No translation for my post because the message is based on a french TV show. Sorry about that.

Of course he was. But the left "bien pensante et politiquement correcte" found this shocking
I wonder what they will do about insecurity if they are to run the country the next 5 years...
