Re: America sucks

I disagree with the title of this thread. There are a lot of things wrong with America (about which we can argue for the thousand years), but to just say "America sucks" is a cop-out.

A far more accurate title would have been "American foreign policy sucks" that, I think could be proven.

Do you mean at this moment in time, we are the best at all the things you listed? Do you mean that over the course of our history, we are the best when compared to the histories of other countries?

Are Canada, Australia, Japan, or Sweden less 'free' than the United States? If so, in what ways, and how did you reach your conclusion? Does your statement have any substance, or is it just unfounded opinion.

Please note by unfounded opinion I absolutely do not mean there is no foundation in saying America is free and great. I only mean to question the comparison implicit in saying "America is best." I am not questioning the freedom of America. I am questioning why you think America does all the things you listed better than Canada does it. Or Japan. Or Sweden. Or any one of the other numerous free countries out there.

Is saying "America is the best country on Earth" similar to saying "The Office is the best show on television," or does the quoted portion of your post have any substance?
In a general sense, I'm only saying that the system set up by the founders of America has worked better than any other so far. Humans have been trying to organize systems of running large populations of themselves since they learned that it was easier and best to cooperate with each other and function together as parts of a "whole" organized society/civilization.

I'm not specifically saying that "America is the best country on Earth", I'm only saying that the ways in which it has been organized, structured and functions assigned has been the best or one OF the best YET. There may BE a better way, I don't know. I think we're far from getting to THAT point though.

The other main point of what I was saying in # 42 was that any organized civilization of humans will have a set of unhappy humans. Unhappy about this that or the other. It's part of the human condition. Even if it reached some kind of perfection there would be people bitching, moaning and complaining. There will ALWAYS be unhappy zealots, weirdos and assholes.

Of course another part of being human is pride in ones "place", so it may be that someone in Japan or any other country could claim that THEIR country is the "best" :-)

What I'm basing MY opinion on is the scientific and technological processes that have been spawned by our "system" and hopefully will CONTINUE to be propogated here.

On the many freedoms we're allowed in our country that aren't allowed in many others.

On the opportunities that can be found here.

On how many people from other countries seek to COME here. Even illegally.

I am wondering if you had a desire to join in discussion with Americans and others when you joined this site, or if you simply wanted to show off your grasp of the language and your level of persuasive speech.

Since you asked, it has been asserted that the ONLY country in the whole UN that can be counted on to vote according to conscience and not self interest is Canada. Finland and Denmark also score rather highly here.

Studies have been done on this, tabulating every UN vote made by that nation and comparing it with that country's short-term self-interest. Only the three named countries here had any kind of a positive score at all. Every other country at the UN will vote their own short-term interest over what is supposedly 'right' every single time.

None of the above, really. I'd love to and will find common language with everyone here eventually. Just...it's my very first experience here didn't go well. Sorry, man. I do realize I'm on the US led board althouth you might have noticed, I limit myself to 'International Politics' thread only, it's where I draw line between being a guest and a troll here
..."grasp of the language" --- please..Man,...compare to the men and women on this board -- I'm most illitetate.

Your language skills will improve as you continue here. I apologise for the ridicule, it was rude. However, you may want to think about how ineffective your trolling is.

Re: America sucks

This is a nice argument and all, but I don't see much point in much of it. We are a country of 300 MILLION people. That means it's a guarantee that a LOT of people do a LOT of good things. But that doesn't blunt, nor does it excuse the bad things that people point out.

This appears to me to be a single argument about two completely unrelated issues. The good we do as a people stands alone, as does the bad.

And as for categorizing the "America sucks" threads/posts, I think THEY are two different subjects as well. Maybe we could take them as, the GOVERNMENT sucks, or the PEOPLE suck instead of lumping them both together. I'll bet you'll find almost all of them concern the actions of our leaders and NOT ourselves as a people.

Just a thought.

Re: America sucks

Chookie, I'm down with you.

Si Modo, this board brings interesting opinions...most of the language I come across here is everything from being beautiful to plain exquisite. But what one could else to expect from the US board?
I will improve with time.

and thaks, man

Yes, and what choice do "the people" have when only liars, sophists and/or idiots will even RUN anymore ?

Check my sig. I've been using that for a long time now.
But the fact that we keep electing corrupt politicians to office means the idiot sheep (my OTHER favorite, descriptive term) are stupid. It doesn't mean they're bad.
And sometimes, although rarely, it isn't their fault at all. Sometimes a VERY good liar will be able to fool even the smartest people.

Usually, they are the only ones who CAN run for office. The big contributors do make those huge donations out of a deep sense of patriotism and/or public service. They want something for their money, and they get it.

Mr. Smith doesn't go to Washington any more.
