Some good points here. The right pretends to support traditional values by banning abortion, keeping gays unmarried and bombing Iran. The left claims to support freedom by endorsing a civil rights agenda that penalizes anyone talented, while avoiding foreign policy that needs correcting. The pattern plays itself out in every industrialized nation. The population keeps rising, as does pollution. Are we heading for doom?
The population and polution in the developed parts of the world are on the decrease.

If we are heading for doom, it is probably because developed societies seem to have too low birth rates. Thus, the human population will decrease in size. If you want to worry about something, I think this is it. We have ways and means of stopping polution and over-population, but we still do not seem to have a way of stopping the low birth rates of developed societies.

Re: Is humanity in decline?

I know we're going to shift this balk discussion to "Economic Issues" thread very soon, but before we do...I'm asking Americans, how does it feel to see your ship sink? Do you know as to why it's sinking? Are any of you planning to run for your lives to Australia or Canada?

Re: Is humanity in decline?

Every problem of this modern age is directly related to overpopulation.
Yet I still haven't heard a politician call for a drastic reduction in population.

So at this point, our political institutions have chosen to ignore the problem, or to talk around the problem, which means that the problem isn't to the point where it's a big enough problem to generate a meaningful response yet.

In essence, the population is shrinking in developed countries. The nativity rate is lower than the replacement value of 2.1 children per capita. This is why some people in developed countries speak of underpopulation as a problem, rather than overpopulation. How can an increasingly smaller work force support all the elderly?
