Spanish King tells Venezuelan President to 'shut up' during summit

Quote:
SANTIAGO (AFP) — Spain's King Juan Carlos I told Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to "just shut up," bringing an Ibero-American summit to end in spectacular fashion on Saturday.

Spain's monarch stormed out just before the scheduled end of the forum, visibly furious at Chavez's description of his former prime minister as a "fascist" and for launching a wide-ranging tirade that could not be stopped.

The dispute was a dramatic finale for the 17th meeting of the heads of state and government of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries in Latin America, and Spain, Portugal and Andorra, which started Thursday.

Chavez -- a notoriously hotheaded leader who is seeking to leverage his country's oil wealth to win influence over other South American nations -- earned the ire of the Spanish delegation upon his arrival on Friday.

His description of Spain's former conservative prime minister Jose-Maria Aznar as a "fascist" prompted current Prime Minister Jose-Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, a socialist, to call on Chavez to show more "respect."

But Chavez forged on, and on Saturday he repeated the contentious f-word in relation to Aznar, adding: "A fascist isn't human, a snake is more human than a fascist."

An irate King Juan Carlos then stepped in, demanding of Chavez: "Why don't you just shut up?"

But the Venezuelan leader carried on, attacking the United States (a favorite target of his), the Catholic Church in Venezuela and the pope. He also accused the United States and Europe of having approved of the failed coup against him in 2002.

Spain's king then stormed out of the conference as Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega stepped up to support Chavez.

Aznar, whose conservative People's Party ruled Spain from 1996 to 2000, telephoned Zapatero and the king Saturday thanking them for sticking up for him. His party, instead, blamed Chavez' tirade on Zapatero's "negligence" in organizing the summit.

Chavez' outburst and King Juan Carlos' finger-pointing admonition to "shut up" was replayed again and again late Saturday on Spanish television news programs to the delight of viewers.

Newspapers in Spain on Sunday praised the regal rebuke, with the right-wing press in particular relishing the outburst from the king.

"The king has put Chavez in his place in the name of all Spaniards," the El Mundo newspaper said, noting that it was "an act without precedence."

It said the monarch's advice was "something that should have been said to him (Chavez) a long time ago."

The left-leaning El Pais newspaper said Chavez's diatribe had "surpassed all tolerable limits in a relationship between two countries."

The row in Santiago overshadowed attempts by the summit's participants to come up with a joint effort to overcome wealth and social inequalities in Latin America in the face of deep ideological differences.

Chavez led a bloc of hardline leftists, backed by Ortega, Bolivian President Evo Morales, Ecuador's President Rafael Correa and the executive secretary to the absent Cuban leader Fidel Castro, Carlos Lage, critical of other participating nations seen as too economically liberal.

Later Sunday, the members of that bloc were to address a "people's summit" of 10,000 left-wing sympathizers.

Hehe, he called Aznar a fascist... how about he look himself in a mirror? Chavez is a fool, Spain has a king that still have some guts

I wonder if anyone here still thinks of Chavez as some kind of hero of the people?

Naomi Campbell is just another on the list of of the braintrust of celebs who has shot herself in the foot. How one acts with respect to state's affairs should be motivated by critical thought applied to state's actions, not by what is fashionable.

I have always seen the King of Spain as a hero. This adds to that.

Yeah, I still laugh when I watch the video on youtube.

Chavez has been talking about every day since then, seeking to draw attention to it and keep the protests of his people in the streets out of the spotlight.

This is anecdotal, but Ive talked to a few Venezuelans online and have yet to hear from one who supports Chavez. Why isnt this ever in the news? Instead we hear about all the celebs who go down to honor him.

Kevin Spacey

Chavez is the product of a democracy where the concentration of wealth became to great.
The US will produce the equivalent to a Chavez if we get into the same situation, the only way to prevent it is to abolish democracy, or tune the system to produce a large middle class.

Why would you presume that? Itd be the opposite if anything. Chavez would allow ONLY people who support him to have internet.

I was thinking more of the level of wealth. Only 12,5% of the people in Venezuale use the internet (source: worldbank). Those are probably the more wealthy who do not benefit as much from Chavez's policies, and are less likely to support him.

Actually, my very conservative, very antichavez Spanish professor at home says exactly the same thing. He says that the wealthy created Chavez.

You really don't know much about what the on-the-ground situation in Venezuela is like, do you?

Do you really think Chavez has that kind of control?
