Kosovo to declare independence

Kosovo is about to declare independence. I wonder if this will go smoothly or not. I know a Serbian personally who has very strong feelings that they shouldn't be allowed to do so. I can't say I agree but I do not want to get into it with him since it's his home country.

Historical moment, the century late people will recall and judge - could that have been avoidable or not, and "what if not" scenarios as we today dispute the Saraevo of 1914.

Serbia Condemns Break; U.S. Recognition Expected

By Peter Finn
Washington Post Foreign Service

PRISTINA, Kosovo, Feb. 17 -- A new state emerged from the long and bloody unraveling of Yugoslavia when the Serbian province of Kosovo declared independence on Sunday. Its ethnic Albanian leaders promised to embrace Kosovo's embittered Serb minority and forge a multiethnic, democratic nation.

"From today onwards, Kosovo is proud, independent and free," Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said in an address to parliament.

The move was immediately condemned by Serbia and its ally Russia. But the United States is expected to quickly recognize the new state, as is most of the European Union, in return for an agreement by Kosovo's leaders to submit to European Union supervision.

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said his country, which regards Kosovo as the cradle of its civilization and home to some of its most treasured Orthodox churches and monasteries, would never recognize the unilateral declaration.

"For as long as the Serbian nation exists, Kosovo will remain Serbia," Kostunica said in a nationally televised address from Belgrade, Serbia's capital. "We do not recognize the forced creation of a state within our territory."...
Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose. Nato and Clinton accomplished close to nothing. Get ready fo another terrorist hot spot from both sides , but this time, let it remain a "European problem".

Agreed, the US has enough problems of its own, without adopting a new one. Though it'll be interesting to see just how United the EU is.

Why is that a European problem ? It was a pet project of the Evil Empire, so take responsibility and suck it up.

If you don't have short-term memory, the EU claimed it was a Europen problem back in the 90s in hopes that the US would stay out of it. The Evil Empire is now Russia, so yeah, you can suck it up, along with the EU.

Kosovo independence. God help us

I hope the leaders of the world will move diplomatically regarding this issue. The rhetoric from Russia and the from the EU and the US are cause for serious concern, I think.

I think everyone on earth is tired of conflict, but there is no shortage of hostility on all sides regarding Kosovo. These are strange days ..

I am particularly interested in some Russian opinions. I hope some of the Russian regulars will chime in here with their thoughts

It's not that simple.
Albanians in Kosovo are the descendants of immigrants. Serbs were the major group, but now newcomers have claimed the land.
Good thing about the matter is that now Serbs can form a stiff border and keep Albanians from moving into Serbia and doing the same thing in the course of time. And I really think that soon Serbs still in Kosovo will start dying. Albanians have already been brutal in their attempts to expell all Serbs from Kosovo.
Serbs should therefore move into Serbia and keep that land, learning from current events.

Believe it or not, but Albanians are already talking about "grand-Albania", which includes Albania, Kosovo and parts from Macedonia.

Racist view? Hell no, Ask Albanians about that. They are.

Mabye the Muslims will see it as the will of the Lord to conquer Europe. But for sure it shows Erdogan in Turkey that the population bomb is more successful than nuclear power.

Re: Kosovo independence. God help us

About time Kosovo became independent. They suffered ethnic cleansing at the hands of savage serbians with a war criminal leader who is now behind bars.

I hope now the rest of Europe will support this new born country and get its economy going.
