In my eye, it's not special. The chinese government just want to "protect" chinese people from bad influences of Internet, similar as the parent of a family use a child-protection software to protect their children from accessing harmful internet contents.

This metaphor explains the behaviour of the chinese government and its handling of ordinary chinese people.

Is that what you predicted?

But what I find somehow a irony is the words in the article:

"The American House of Representatives called a hearing after the Yahoo incident. “These companies tell us they’re going to change China," one congressman complained, "but instead, China changes them.” "

Re: How China Leads the World in Web Censorship

U know what am I found
I've found most of you were not talking about this article, you just said something to laugh at China and Chinese.(Agree?)
I don't wanna in.

TALK About this article:
1/ I have to admit that I meet some of the fact that mentioned, fe, some particular keywords are forbidden in the search engine, and now the "Tibet protest" ' websites are forbidden too.(Agree?)

2/I believe some of statment of this article is possiblely be true, through I've never heard or met before. Like:
"Surveillance computers form the backbone of the Chinese security system, monitoring the bulk of online communication round the clock. ","the video sites have the govenment stake",etc(Agree?)

3/How innovative is the govenment! So are the netizens of China. just like viewing the pornograpics, you just need to have a little bit of craft(?) and
tools to cross the firewall.(More?)

4/I think some condition should be improved along with the development of China, but it need time and improved bit by bit.(Agree?)

finally, thank you ,for posting this kind of article that I haven't seen in China; and I'd like to post some that you prabably don't know too , if there is a chance.

What the Chinese gov't is "protecting" is itself. No glasnost for China.

Well, we can certainly agree that China doesn't have a monopoly on moral deficiency.

The Great Firewall of China is a lot like the US-Mexican border. Thank God

It's true unfortunately. But to say exactly, it is to protect CCP.

Exactly. The CCP needs to protected from the truth, because the truth could destroy it.

Re: How China Leads the World in Web Censorship

I have been to China and did not find it as most Americans think it is. It is not a third world country. In fact China is very wealthy. I found gentle, kind, and happy people there. And being older I was treated much better than I am in my own country. This I think is largely due to 2000 years of Confucianism.

I did not find them committed to communism. I found the Chinese people committed to being Chinese. They did not see Chairman Mao as a villain. In fact, the lines were long to go see his body. After being there, it is difficult for me to see Communism in China as a negative thing. I think it is a stepping stone to freedom. They could never have gotten themselves out of feudalism without help. Unfortunately America was not willing to help when they asked us, so there was no one to go to but the Soviets.

I believe that Communism will fall in China. The Chinese people have a work ethic and they are demanding and getting their rights as we speak.

Then I suggest you might want to get out of the cosmopolitan areas, I have been there twice. The large commerce centers are indeed trying to catch up with the west by building these centers, making these areas attractive to westerners, wealthy Asians etc. But that’s a very small portion of the pop. and especially land area.

I was not encouraged to take rides around the country side however, by my Chinese guides and in one on one conversations with other Chinese, the underlying message was, that a huge mass of the pop. were not really seeing their standards of living increasing as one would expect.

Actually, I HAVE been to the rural areas where agriculture is the way of life. I think you read more into what I wrote than I, in fact, said. One would do well to take a look around THIS country, as WE have many poor people even though we escaped feudalism 200 years ago compared to the Chinese peoples' 60 or so years past the bound feet.

We have much to learn from a civilization that is 5000 years old. But we probably will not learn from China because of our own biases. As far as the standard of living, that country has come along where many others have not.

Yes, it's a long and nice tradition of Chinese society to respect and treat the old people more kindly.

The Communism in China, originally imported from Soviets, was a catastrophic experiment of chinese people to try to find the way to become wealthy and strong. The Communism in China has already failed and fallen, at least in economic aspect. Thank god.

It's valuable for a person from West that you have such a point of view. My respect to you.

My niece sent me an ad for people who would be willing to come to China and go out and speak favorably about her. I would have gone back just to have the experience, then gone on the lecture tour.

It is not hard to speak favorably of China. Her people are the nicest I have met anywhere. My best recollections of China is 1) the smell of herbs from the Traditional Medicine Hospital and 2) that no one is fat and no one is rude.
