EU finally hits target on the enviroment

After years of bullshit legislation on air and water quality which only had the effect of slowing down real estate and infrastructure projects finally the EU gets something right on the enviroment. Now every substance used on plants will have to be tested by the new agency ECHA which has been founded earlier this month to replace all the national agencies. The move will result in a restriction of the use of several popular pesticedes.

If, in fact, that is the result.

Making something larger and more cumbersome doesn't always make it better.

Well, that can be...
But it can also be more efficent than 27 national agencies working at the same time...

My guess is, after a period of chaos, it will do good work

I could not say that the efforts on water quality were fruitless. Especially with the admission of the new member states huge investments were made due to that.

There are also ecological programs for rivers which affected my home region quite clearly. Rivers have been renatured, the effect of large hydro power plants has been reduced by construction fish ladders etc as part of EU programs. These steps are expected to have a significant impact on the fish populations that came under tremendous stress over the last decades.

In regards to the pesticide testing by one central agency, I think its a good step.
