Re: EU pressures czech president to sign Lisbon treaty

03.11.09, 09.12 H The Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic has given its green light to the Treaty.

Of course, it's good news. I will never understand people who are against more cooperation and unity. All in all, the EU has made Europe stronger (that is why many Americans dislike it) and all in all it's a success - a difficult one, yet a sucess.

We will see. I still doubt about wether Vaclav Klaus will sign the Lisbon treaty. But I also was nearly sure the Lisbon treaty never will be signed from Ireland. Only an economy crisis was able to convince enough european people from doing the right things (on the wrong reasons?). I would wish we all could live in wealth, harmony and respect of god without catastrophes. The lingering illness "money" is not a solution for every future - but somehow it would be really a kind of joke of history if a crash in the american markets - what caused worldwide very heavy problems - would had saved Europe from being destructed. Man proposes, god disposes.

Ladies and gentleman - please stand up for the still existing multinational anthem of the European Union: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpcUxwpOQ_A

JAWOHL

Barroso was right when he said, that the reform process that lead to the Lisbon treaty was like running a marathon... with hurdles. Who would have thought that such a marathon could be won?

The EC is dead, long live the EU

PS:
No seriously, this is a good day for Europe, even though a lot of people probably will disagree with me on this.

Re: EU pressures czech president to sign Lisbon treaty

Glad to hear it - good luck with the union Europe. Hopefully a good balance can be found between the developing contintental governance and more local governments. It's quite a step IMO to show that an area once as hostile as Europe was to join together.

Well, actually, one of the consequences of Lisbon will be to transfer some of the stuff to the MPs rather than the Commission. The European Parliament will be in charge of 70% of the issues now.

However, I may surprise you here, as much as I am for "democracy", I am not sooo certain that it is a very good thing in terms of efficiency... Let say it this way, it may make policy makinga bit more difficult.

It's a good day, that's for sure and at least Europe is moving forwards again!

We'll all probably live long enough to see, how things will develop from here on and whether that was a single step towards a glorious future or the step too far and directly ldeading into tragedy.

We'll see, until then "AVE EUROPA! Morituri te salutant" or for making anobs Nazi alarm run amok (again) HEIL EUROPA! Der ENDSIEG rückt näher!

Anyway it's a good day for Europe.

Where do you have the number "70%" from? Isn't it the case that actually pretty much everything except for foreign and defense issues is now under what was formerly known as co-decision procedure?

A nice detail is also that the Parliament now will have the power to scrutinize the whole EU budget. I am looking forward to the in fight over the CAP budget.

I think your fear about efficiency is rather unfounded. The EP is a single body which actually has the ability of getting to a common position (backed by the needed majority) rather efficiently. The bottleneck was in the Council and its unanimity decisions. As they have been drastically cut back in favour of majority votings, I actually expect a substantial gain in efficiency within the EU, even if the EP should stand up more often in the future.
