Germany plans to stop foreign aid to China

I applaud the new German government for this move. Finally, a country is putting words into actions when it comes to China.

Online: Germany plans to stop foreign aid to China - The Local

Germany plans to cut off millions of euros in foreign aid to emerging economic giant China, the new development minister Dirk Niebel told daily Bild on Friday.

The controversial first move by Niebel, who was appointed despite having been a vocal critic of foreign development aid in the past, has angered opposition politicians.

Niebel indicated India was also in the government's sights for aid cuts. He said Germany, which spends more on development aid than any country apart from the United States, could find better uses for the money.

"Battling poverty is more important than ever for Germany. That means we should place our resources where they can help the most,” he told the paper. “Economic giants like China and India no longer fulfil these criteria.”

He did not specify how else the money might be spent.

The most recent figures available show that Germany gave China €67.5 million in 2007 and India €84 million in 2008.

Niebel’s party, the pro-business Free Democrats, went into coalition negotiations with Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats with the express wish of merging the development ministry into the foreign ministry – dramatically diminishing its importance.

The opposition centre-left Social Democrats development spokesman Sascha Rabbe called Niebel's appointment as development minister a "bad joke" after Merkel’s new cabinet was sworn in on Wednesday.

The Greens' spokeswoman for development, Ute Koczy, and Greens parliamentarian Viola von Cramon branded the plan an ''arrogant first act in office'' that would have ''disastrous consequences.''

Co-operation with developing countries was essential to solving global problems such as climate change, the financial crisis and food shortages, they said.

Aid to China had long ceased to be about “help” or poverty alleviation, but was rather about targeted projects and programs, and fostering dialogue and co-operation, they said. They added that China also wanted to continue the co-operation.

Germany has been giving economic aid to China?

I must admit I was not aware of this. It doesn't make any sense - so I suppose it is nice that they stopped.

Although I have no idea what the OP means by saying: Finally, a country is putting words into actions when it comes to China

This decision did not take courage.

Nor did I claim it did. Germany has been, relatively speaking, more vocal in their criticism of China in terms of economics and human rights. Yet, for all their criticism, they never really did anything. This is a good, and practical, step IMO.

Sounds good - but indeed we are only idiots, that's all. Seems we just simple forgot to control what we are doing with our money. So we gave still money to China although it became meanwhile a very rich nation. Other nations need more help.

Something I have never understood.
China has been becoming an economic giant for years now, they loan us money, buy our properties...yet we are giving $millions to their poor. Again - the term useful idiots continues to play out in American foreign policies.

Good for Deutschland...I knew my heritage had brains.

Really a good move and one totally overdue!

But I'll wait and see whether the foreign aid won't be replaced by other more hidden forms of aid, before I'm truelly in for applauding the government for this move.

I especially like the last sentence,

They added that China also wanted to continue the co-operation.
Gee, who would've thought.

Indeed. They should be applauded. The U.S. needs to shut down its massive welfare program for them, too, along with canceling their 'Favored Nation' trade status. They are just labor racketeers and thieves.

I would think India could still use some help, at least parts of the country.

What is wrong with using the aid money to help Germans???

No, we pay them bribes, under the guise of 'aid'; most of that money goes right into the pockets of Chinese bureaucrats and gets divvied up all along the Party food chain, like most 'aid', except for the corporate welfare programs. Their 'New Middle Class' is the same as the old 'Middle Class', just richer; they are people who are Party members or are related to Party members. About 10% are 'new' middle class', mainly techies and managers with skill sets even the Party can't do without.

Re: Germany plans to stop foreign aid to China

Christ the Chinese give us economic aid by buying our debt so we can keep funding the federal budget without actually paying for it as we go - maybe we should hit the Germans up for some foreign aid...

Actually the Chinese thought that if they could accumulate a huge amount of U.S. currency they could bully us any way and time they wanted. They didn't count on the Treasury making it all a massive worthless pile of toilet paper almost overnight, and that nobody would want it at any price.

Anybody notice the news about the Treasury people of India buying up over 300 tonnes of gold in one transaction the other day?
