Actually he did so earlier when he said that he was so obnoxious in the jury room that they all moved to his side, and caused an unjust decision. It appears to me that HE is the one who should be in Jail. Not the one they were trying.

Re: Change the Jury system!

I've sat on a jury before. There were people with varied backgrounds, varied educational levels, different races, etc. I didn't feel like any of them weren't qualified or intelligent enough to be there. Even when I was in the larger "pool," when the defense & prosecution get to Q&A potential jurors, I felt everyone who answered questions was intelligent enough to sit on a jury.

I hope like hell, if I'm ever in trouble (esp. if I'm wrongly accused!), that SteveOx ain't on my jury.

Re: Change the Jury system!

It is not perfect, that is for sure, but the USA has the best judicial system in the world.

I would only change this: I would add term limits to EVERY judge, including the men in black.

ox, are you prepared to put yourself forward as a jurer? If so, you can be relieved that spelling and grammar aren't a pre-requisite!

The jury system has often let people down. Many innocent people have gone to jail, some guilty have gone free. However, if I had a choice between university graduates and a cross-section of society, I would settle for the cross-section every time.

I know people who have been formally educated and I know others who haven't. All that is needed on a jury is a willingness to listen to the evidence. What makes you think the university educated are the only ones capable of this?

Have you actually been in a lecture where the ratbags up the back have actually drowned out what the lecturer is saying? I have!

G'day Dr, As Elizabeth Bennett pointed out to Mister Darcy..."I don't know any woman (man) with all those attributes".

Perhaps ox doesn't realise that there are university students, and then there are university students! Ox could compile a list of questions to be asked of jurors such as

Did you obtain a degree which is guaranteed to give you a minimum $500,000 per year?

Whilst studying, did you ever get a mark less than a Distinction? This will separate the wheat from the chaff. Anything less than this yardstick of excellence and they are out the door!

Were you ever late with an assignment? Just think of how many will be weeded out with just this one question!

Good heavens, I am doing ox's work for him. Over to you, ox!

After Meridious has stopped patting himself on the back, would someone point out to him that his justice system is based on English Common Law, just our Australian system is. The US didn't exactly invent the basics! However, there appear to be differences which haven't exactly lent themselves to improving the basic premise!

Re: Change the Jury system!

Perhaps we could at least kick them off the court at age 80. Even the Vatican doesn't allow Cardinals over the age of 80 to vote for the Pope.

Did anyone catch the PBS special about the history of the Supreme Court lately? There was a whole section on senile judges. Even William Howard Taft & Oliver Wendell Holmes.

Common sense should probably trump common law, in this case. . .
