Call for Gonzales to step down, sign the petition

Make your voice heard for justice and what is right. Tell Gonzales to step down. Save our justice system. We should have a top law enforcement officer who tells the truth and obeys US law. Gonzales should go.

From an email that arrived today:

Quote:
Dear Samantha,

Today I called on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign. Join me in calling for him to step down.

HillaryClinton.com - Action

Why should Gonzales resign? Because he is at the center of a widening scandal over the firing of several U.S. attorneys -- firings we now know to be political. These attacks on the impartiality of the federal government's prosecutors are a genuine threat to the foundations of our justice system.

It's so bad that one U.S. attorney in Arkansas was fired to make room for a former aide to Karl Rove.

Gonzales's chief of staff has already resigned over the firings, but the attorney general himself is ultimately responsible for what happened. Join me in asking for him to resign now.

HillaryClinton.com - Action

Gonzales isn't the only one who needs to answer for this scandal. President Bush and his staff must come clean about their involvement in these politically motivated firings. I've joined the call for a full and thorough investigation to determine all the facts.

But it is time for the attorney general -- who repeatedly and falsely claimed the firings were based on performance -- to step down. He has clearly forgotten the difference between his current job as America's top law enforcement officer and his old job as President Bush's personal attorney.

Join me today in calling on Alberto Gonzales to resign.

HillaryClinton.com - Action

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

I'm sorry Sam, but Internet petitions have just about as much effect as peeing in the ocean.

Re: Call for Gonzales to step down, sign the petition

Sam, I wonder about something here.

Clearly, you're a fan of Senator Clinton. To get an e-mail like that, you'd have to subscribe to some website or something like that.

You're always saying, any time a scandal erupts, that Bush is the guy who should assume ultimate responsibility, since it's his administration. Yet, Senator Clinton clearly states: Gonzales's chief of staff has already resigned over the firings, but "the attorney general himself is ultimately responsible for what happened."

Now, given the good Senator's position on the matter, I wonder if you agree with her. As you seem to want everyone to sign a petition forcing the resignation of Gonzalez, and as she sees him as the one who's ultimately responsible", I wonder if you'll now start to gain some comprehension of the theories behind "delegation" and "chain of command"...

From today's Orlando Sentinel.

Personally, I'm not going to sign some partisan petition for Hillary. Not a chance.

Matt, surely you recognize that there's a difference between the transition that occurs at the beginning of a presidency and the firing of individuals mid-term. The mid-term firing of 8 is unprecedented.

Here we go.

Yes, I have some concerns about the firings. However, I think it is very premature be to demanding resignations.

Unless, like Hillary, your concern is not for what happened, but for how to make partisan hash out of it.

And if I do reach the conclusion that Gonzales is culpable, I won't be endorsing Hillary's partisan approach.

Can someone explain to me why it matters that these attorneys were fired? I'm not asking rhetorically - I'm serious. If they all serve at the discretion and will of the POTUS, what does it matter?

It's not only this political firing that and trying to replace attorneys with Karl Rove croneys and loyal Bushites that makes me want Gonzales gone from the top law enforcing positions. It's the torture issue that he champions too. Gonzales is not a good guy. He needs to go.

Re: Call for Gonzales to step down, sign the petition

Why wasn't Hillary trying to get rid of him over the torture?

If he' so terrible why is she only working on this now? Could it be because there is partisan hash to be made?

It matters because they aren't being fired for doing a bad job at prosecuting bad guys. One of them successfully prosecuted Duke Cunningham. It matter because of who is replacing them. Karl Rove's buddy who barely has lawyer experience is replacing one of them. It matter's because the way they were rated was how loyal they are to the President and Republicans. Duke Cunningham is a Republican. Will US attorneys be punished for prosecuting republicans and rewarded for prosecuting democrats? Is our judicial system one big partisan joke?
