Re: When will Gonzales resign?

The Senate Judiciary Committee has voted without dissent to authorized the issuing of subpoenas.

Quote:
"I do not take lightly a take-it-or-leave-it so-called offer from the White House," said Mr. Leahy, alluding to the administration's offer to make current and former aides available for private interviews, as opposed to public testimony. "I believe in the prerogatives of the United States Senate."Before the vote, Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, the senior Republican on the committee, said it was urgent to get to the bottom of the firings to reassure the remaining federal prosecutors that they will not be subject to political retaliation.

"Every U.S. attorney has to be subject to a chilling effect as to what has gone on in Washington, whether the U.S. attorneys who were asked to resign, whether that was done properly or improperly," he said.

But Mr. Specter said he would have preferred a compromise approach, under which administration aides would have been interviewed publicly but not necessarily under oath, since they would still be subject to prosecution if they lied to Congress.

Now let's see if they are forced to issue them. If Rove and Myers testify willingly there doesn't have to be a big standoff.

Re: When will Gonzales resign?

Someone want to remind me again what illegal action Alberto Gonzales committed that should require hearings and his resignation?

My take on it is that some people believe Gonzalez should go not because of any illegal acts but because his honesty and integrity are in doubt.

I don't see the point in asking for his resignation, because Bush would never replace him with an honest person.

How about lying to Congress?

I can't stand Gonzales or Bush and also distrust both of them. I think Gonzales should resign in wake of the two border patrol agents who are in jail. I do not think Gonzales should resign over the US attorney firings as the President has the right to fire them AT HIS WILL.

In America we vote for a President, not a dictator. He is not above the law and doesn't have sweeping power to "sweep" away anyone he doesn't like. There must be sensible reason in all his decisions and there must be oversight. This is a democracy, remember?

He done fooled me. I thought he would at least have been on his way out by now.

Bush is getting bolder, that will be his ultimate downfall.

Re: When will Gonzales resign?

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales approved plans to fire several U.S. attorneys in a November meeting, according to documents released Friday that contradict earlier claims that he was not closely involved in the dismissals.

I'm sorry if this was already posted.

Umm yeah. Well according to the law he actually does have the authority to do so. If congress doesn't like that then by all means change the law.

Well If he lied to congress in a manner that is illegal then by all means congress can use it's authority to discipline in whatever manner they see fit. I suppose they would.

Re: When will Gonzales resign?

It's confusing me, how Bush and Gonzales both, have said (lied) they were not closely involved, when the attorneys serve at the president's pleasure, wouldn't the president and his attorney general HAVE to be involved?

Do these people just lie about EVERYTHING? Do they think we are THAT stupid?

I believe the question is whether or not firing a prosecutor who is already in the middle of an investigation that you want killed, soley for the purpose of killing said investigation, is obstruction of justice.

Im not saying I have the legal answer to that, but I know that's the question at least some people are asking.

Saying that they have the power to fire someone does not mean it's legal in that context, the same as it would be illegal to fire them for failure to give sexual favors, or for refusing to break the law, etc...

Re: When will Gonzales resign?

He may have on choice Like the 8 attorneys he was responsible for firing. Not because he fired them, but because he lied about it to congress.

As you can see I happily reject the premise in which you Libs "demand" certain things, such as you demanding that I elaborate, when Liberals refuse to do so. The truth that I have been speaking about the Liberal anti-Americanism is in the latest bill that puts a date in which the Liberals want us to surrender.

Let me clear something up for you here, Clinton got us into Samalia, a skirmish we were going to win easily, but Clinton, being a Liberal, was a true coward and ran away from that. Then there was the WTC bombing in 1993, the USS Cole, various US embassies around the world, the Waco fiasco.

The fact of the matter is, since 9/11, we haven't been attacked by terrorists because our military is doing it's job, and because you Liberals are too weak spined to admit it, I'll tell you what the only purpose of the military is, and that is to kill people and break things, making this the longest time of peace and prosperity since Ronald Reagan.
