My take on this is this is what happens when you send the same men back into combat time after time, which we tried not to do in past wars. But back then we had a larger, inducted army to pull from, where today we have a volunteer force which allows our elites to keep their own gene pool safe and sound as others do the dying.
Back in WW2, if you flew your given number of missions over germany, you were allowed to get out of those bombing runs. That is no longer the case, and there is a price to be paid for that. We are not more violent, our leaders are just increasing more stupid.
"Like every other good thing in this world, leisure and culture have to be paid for. Fortunately, however, it is not the leisured and the cultured who have to pay." Aldous Huxley.
