Re: Firefly was the greatest television series of all time.
It's certainly among the best SF series, and could have been the best if it had been longer.
B5 was better overall, but was flawed by the television process. It was a 5 year story that was going to be canceled in it's third year and so had to truncate the major tale. Then when it was picked up and revived for the full run it had to tack on two more season's with the main theme already revealed, and ended up not really making much sense BG could have been good but was was overrated and spoiled by a truly awful ending. It was also just a little too dark, even for my tastes and the constant veiled references to the War on Terror were just a little much. I think Lost may be the best in SF but I have to reserve judgement. If it turns out to be a big disappointment, like the Riverworld Series was in books, I will then have to go with The Prisoner, and yes, I realize The Prisoner was just as short as Firefly, but it was meant to be. Firefly had legs for 3-5 seasons at least. The best television series of alll time or any genre remains, of course, the immortal Kung Fu. and NOT the second one, which was truly awful but had it's moments. The first was like nothing I've seen before or since.

Definitely up there. Would likely have been the best if not for the short run.
Best ever? Probably not. Kung Fu was very good, but I'm a big fan of Gunsmoke. |

I agree. It had allot of potential and the geniuses at Fox cancelled it before the series could really get momentum. I really like the movie they made based on the series a few years ago.

I love Firefly. However, I can't support it as best television series of all time. The original Star Trek series has to take that place for me. Second would have to be the first two seasons of Seaquest DSV.

Firefly was great. Unfortunately, not a lot of people got the premise.
Every once in a while, I'll have a firefly marathon on my AppleTV. Matt |

Re: Firefly was the greatest television series of all time.
Me neither. Just googled it, apparently it was a "space western", whatever the fuck that is, lol..
I read a lot of sci-fi in my younger days, but never really got in to the sci-fi tv shows. edit: just googled "space western", lol... now I get it, this is actually what the original Star Trek was all about... "Space, the final frontier..". TBH, I'd kinda forgotten about the different sci-fi sub-genres. Last edited by Jefe; 2 Weeks Ago at 05:44 AM. |

I dont know about all time, but damn it was a good show. Joss Whedon gets no love. Now Dollhouse is suffering. Did you notice all the Firefly actors on ABC now? 2 on V, Fillion on Castle, Im sure Jane is somewhere.

lol... it's not like "cowboys & indians" or anything. It's just a category name. BTW, I believe Star Wars is considered a "space opera"... grand story line, larger than life characters, good vs. evil, etc.

Re: Firefly was the greatest television series of all time.
Space western in that on some planets they walk about with laser pistols on their hips and have fights at high noon. Its actually only the rebels that are western like. The 'empire' is very high tech. Most of the show takes place on a spaceship like the Millenium Falcon, with a random crew of smuggler types. Yeah, its hard to describe, great show though.
