Re: Why is Palin Using Her Kids as "Boo" Shields?

Karl Rove is the most powerful Republican alive. Defender of scandals, architect of McCain campaign tactics, consultant to Fox News. And he can't be voted out. His tactics are what you saw from Bush II 2000, and Bush II 2004...and now...what people are sick of. Swift boat type campaigns, character assassination, name calling, inuendo, and so on.

If I hear one more person say "it shows poor judgement" I'm going to puke on your shoes and shit in your hat. Name me one Presidential candidate that has never made a poor judgement. It's not possible to make it 40 years without a poor judgement or two. If someone is perfect...now THAT is a problem.

When the North Vietnamese anti Aircraft battery fired that SAM at McCain...he pulled back on his stick and punched it straight up. Which is exactly what his trainers told him NOT to do. Because the SAM missile has a far superior thrust to weight ratio. Going straight up...means that the SAM owns you, and he couldn't have made a worse evasion decision.

The second worse decision McCain made in his life was Sarah Palin. And he just may pay for it with an election victory. If he would have picked Tim Pawlenty, who knows. At least Pawlenty wouldn't be causing Republicans to whine, snivel, and feign outrage for the mistreatment of the incompetant dunderhead they're trying to push on us (Palin).

But has anyone noticed that, with the exception of a brief appearance at the DNC when they talked to their dad on television and walking around on stage with him at the very end of his speech, you NEVER see Malia and Sasha Obama. Palin Drops Puck at Flyer’s Game Receives Mixed Reaction « FOX Embeds « FOXNews.com
from the article:

Quote:
. . . A carpet was laid down and Palin, dressed in a beige trench, walked on to the ice joined by her daughters Willow and Piper. The GOP Vice-Presidential nominee said at an earlier fundraiser that she would stop some of the booing from the rowdy Philadelphia fans by putting her seven year old daughter, Piper in a Flyers jersey. She said, “How dare they boo Piper!” . . .
She shouldn't hide behind a minor child as a shield to force only nice receptions and ward away boorish ones. But worse insofar as campaigning, it's a huge colloquial cultural flop too insofar as the Philly region culture goes, much like Kerry trying to get a Philly cheeseteak with swiss cheese and eating it sideways instead of hands on wolfing it end to end 'like a real man does' if you will. Hiding behind a minor child as a shield from the 'Philly baptism' boo is 10x worse in how it gets received.

Here was her 'reception' at the NY Rangers--Philadelphia Flyers game in typical Philly style:

YouTube - Sarah Palin BOOED at hockey game

Here's the deal with Philly given I live in the area--Philly boos everybody except Rocky because he's cool, he won unlike most real Philly sports teams and figures, he's from the gritty Philly, and also fictional. And if Rocky was real and lost he'd get booed too.

It's just a local tradition and pasttime and people laugh when they do it. I don't know how it got started, but it did at least decades ago. My personal guess is that being a sports fan in Philly is such a sad and pathetic experience given the historic record of losing so much across all sports that booing just became the inside joke in Philly. The fact that the Phillies are in the pennant race right now is almost taboo to mention because it might jinx them as per usual.

You get street kudos, however, for being able to take the boos in stride. It's kind of like military hazings and such--the boos are a test of your mettle and fortitude for this gritty city. If you handle it cool, then you pass the character test and Philly people are reciprocally very 'thumbs up' on you for passing the test. That's why they also are so loyal to their sports teams although they usually suck. They may suck, but they have grit for passing the boo tests and such. But if you flunk it, and they'll guffaw you even more for being a 'weak pussy,' etc, and they'll just harangue you more until you either toughen up to standards or you become the punching bag for being snivelling.

Palin was heading for an even deeper boo because it's known in Philly from her frequent recent stays here that she is a big Scott Gomez fan on the NY Rangers (he was the one the puck was dropped to) because he is from AK. Given the Philly-NYC rivalry in sports, however, that is the surest way to get booed. It's a sports and colloquial thing once again. The only teams or fans that get booed more than them are the Dallas Cowboys and their fans in the NFL games against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Heck, a Palin supporter had to save her skin from boos, guffaws and a big faux pas when she nearly went jogging on Philly with her NY Rangers shirt on:

Inqlings: But will Palin lose votes in Dallas?

By Michael Klein

Inquirer Columnist

In Wasilla, they don't know about all the love between Philly and New York.

Bobbi and Garry Adair of Montgomeryville were on a down elevator last Sunday at the Westin in Center City - he in a Phillies shirt, she in a Donovan McNabb Eagles jersey - when the door opened.

In stepped Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her security guys. Palin wore a New York Rangers sweater with "Palin 08" on the back.

Bobbi Adair greeted the veep candidate and asked what she was up to.

Going for a run, Palin replied.

"Not in that shirt you're not," Adair says she told her.

Which explains why Palin jogged in a green No. 5 jersey, topped by a pink cap. News anchors later praised her sartorial sense.

Adair, who still has Palin's Rangers sweater (which the two swapped in the elevator lobby), has been promised a replacement McNabb jersey from the Eagles. No word on whether Palin wants hers back. "If she wins, I hope I get invited to the inauguration," Adair says.
Inqlings: But will Palin lose votes in Dallas? | Philadelphia Inquirer | 10/05/2008

These things are preventable, however, with a little research and being willing to playing to--rather than defy--the traits and quirks of any local area. "When in Rome, do as the locals do" is wise political courting, just as it is with socialising, etc.

I found the whole episode amusing and appropriate. I do hope the woman stops parading her kids around though.

Before I am flamed too much, let me say I had the same feelings about the Clintons during 1991 & 1992. For those too young to remember, Chelsea was a freckled 12 yo in braces who hadn't mastered hair products just yet in 1992. The right-wing press was absolutely vicious toward the child. It was appalling.
After the election, Hillary removed Chelsea nearly totally from the spotlight until she accompanied her parents on a whistle-stop tour across America in 1996 (photo below). According to Chelsea, she had to beg her parents to be allowed to go on that trip.
One notable exception to the shielding of Chelsea was when Bill Clinton announced to the world that he had philandered with Monica. Chelsea and Hillary were both there for that and one has to wonder what 15 yo Chelsea, who obviously was very close to her father (the press often got long-distance shots like the one below of Bill and Chelsea on outings during the shielded periods) thought of that whole mess.
Man, she's got some wicked choppers! You'd think Bill and Hillary would have spent a few bucks to get those fixed. Bill, especially, can appreciate how those teeth would be a detriment!

So do you think "its cool" to parade your young children around for political gain? Especially under such harsh circumstances?

On November 6, 1992, three days after her father won the elections, when Chelsea was still in braces, Rush Limbaugh said the following on his television show: "Everyone knows the Clintons have a cat; Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is also a White House dog?". He then pointed to a video monitor, which switched to a picture of Chelsea.

Chelsea is within a month of the same age as one of my younger children. I remember all of the horrible things that were said about her gawky adolescent figure, her mass of untamed red hair and her general lack of attractiveness as a young teen. Right-wing radio was the worst offender and many of the quotes are not still on the Net some 8 to 16 years later.
The Right-Wing loons are utterly dispicable, reprehensible guttersnipe.

Jeez... That was bad.

Not even the inherent sympathy for marching out alongside a "special olympics" person restrained the crowd's disapproval.

I would guess that had Palin's daughter and the mentally challenged person not been with Palin that the crowd reaction might have actually been more raucous.

I'm not sure what this really means... Philly fans are notorious for being unruly. They would probably would have boo'ed Mother Theresa......

Oh, that is so wrong, but funny. Seriously, though, I thought she was a cute kid, even for being at that gangly age. And, she has grown into a very attractive young lady.

Re: Why is Palin Using Her Kids as "Boo" Shields?

I think we see Palin's kids more because she just splashed onto the scene like 6 weeks ago. I think had she built her own campaign, like Obama, the kids would be back in Alaska in school, and only coming out now and again, like Obama's daughters.

It's also the "family values" thing, too, which is part of the Palin package. Part of what was supposed to be so appealing about her was the fact that she's just a regular person and a hockey mom first, so if you're going to be those things, you sort of have to cart the family around on the campaign trail.
