The army came up with the M249 SAW which is much lighter to fit that role.
Yeah, the SAW is a hell of a weapon.

The way you describe the M60 is exactly how he describes it - heavy and a pain in the ass to carry.

Of course, that's about all he'll say about his Vietnam experiences.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

My next-door neighbor spent 6 years in Vietnam total while in the army and has some great stories. Another guy I know will not say much about it, when he does it is not pleasant. A lot of survivor guilt in his case. He said the only time he was sure he was coming home was when he was leaving there on a jet to fly home. Ask him sometime about the 90MM Recoilless Rifle, that is even worse. Sucker weighs 35 lb, and I got stuck humping that thing for a year, I hated that fucker

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

My favorite firearm is always the next one I'm planning on buying.

I'm waiting for the next gunshow like a kid waiting for santa claus on christmas eve.

My plan is to find a moderately priced .45-70 so I can hunt here in mississippi and alabama during the primitive weapon season.

The problem is finding a decent rifle in that caliber for under 500.00 bucks...

Yeah, I don't know if it's survivor's guilt or what. I know that he was a Green Beret, that he jumped out of moving aircraft, and that in addition to the M60, he blew stuff up. I think he saw some bad, bad shit, and never completely recovered from it. I figure it's not my place to push it.

I found some 45-70 single shots at GunsAmerica for as low as $295. It looks like you have a few options there.

If it's the caliber you like, check out the BFR 45-70 revolver. I was eyeing a .444 Marlin BFR at the last gunshow I was at. They have a silky smooth action, and there's just something about a revolver with a 4" cylinder chambered for a high-powered rifle round…

The primative season is restricted to rifles with a breech action, single shot, with an octagonal barrel.

I've seen a few really cheaply made rifles out there for under 300.00 but I'm trying to find a nicer grade for around 450.00 or so. I heard H&R had a decent looking rifle out there for about 395.00, but I haven't seen it in person yet.

The SAW is a POS in my opinion. It may have been great new, but in it's current condition, the thing sucks ass. I hate it. However, there is no real replacement for it right now.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

SAW jams a lot? Doesn't that figure. It was after my time. When I hear the phrase "weapon jam" the first thing I think of is the old M16A1, very finicky weapon IMO. The older guys when i was in that recalled the M14 said the M14 was far more dependable.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

I am looking to buy my first gun. probably some sort of standard inexpensive handgun.

I was wondering what caliber gun I should get, What is most common used bullet for handguns, I want standard Military/Police bullet that has reasonable stopping power.

But this is way cool, double barrel pump action shotgun : )

The SAW is old and worn out. It is prone to some horrendous stoppages, which often require the dis-assembly of the weapon. It is a nightmare to clean, and the feed systems suck. Using a magazine for ammo source is an almost guarantee for fouling, and the plastic drums are flat out retarded.

When it does work, it is decent, but the unreliability of it is a true concern. I've been around that thing since 1993, it was a POS then, and it is still one now. By the way, a SAW and a PKM are vastly different weapons.

Seems to me that it's not the weapon itself, but the quantity of the weapons.
THat they wear out is normal. but spear parts, new weapons etc.. where's the normal maintenance?

Our now retired KvKK SAWs were helluva lot older, but I'd imagine that they were no less used. (some complained that they jammed all the time, but this was because of blanks, not the weapon)

I knowIknowIknow. But PKM is used here as a SAW.
