Hmm, ok. I will take a look at that option.

Besides, even the once-mightiest .44 Magnum has been (massively) surpassed on power now.

Monster cartridges like the .480 Ruger, .500 S&W, .460 S&W and .454 Casull can make the .44 look like a cap gun. The .500 generates ~3 times the muzzle energy of the .44 Mag.

Personally, if I am going to put up with something as big and heavy as some of those, I'll go for a rifle.

Interesting, it seems that my firearm knowledge is growing obsolete heh. Need more research.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

I was at the range one day a couple lanes down from a guy shooting his new S&W .500.

He fired the first round and I thought the thing had exploded. It was like a hand grenade in that indoor range. I stepped out to take a break while he shot.

Fortunately, he only managed to shoot 20 rounds or so before he got tired of holding that anvil up, and I was able to go back and shoot the rest of my drills for the day.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

Don't really have a favorite, but this looks kinda interesting. At 6000 rounds per minute (20 mm), the ammo could get a little expensive though.

By the size of the handgrip, I'd say that's probably a 7.62mm, not a 20mm. The 20mm gun is about 6 feet long, and weighs ~240 pounds without an ammo feed system.

Believe it or not, there are a handful of civilian transferrable 7.62mm miniguns out there. There is a guy who has one mounted on a Humvee that he brings to machine gun shoots.

IIRC, the guns go for around $100,000 or so.

Figure at 6,000 rounds a minute, and ~$0.20 a round, you're talking around $1,200 dollars a minute to shoot it.

Wow, thats like 100 rounds per second. I guess thats why it goes under the name "Painless" in Commando.

You could well be right about the size. The site I found it on (LINK) claimed it was a 20 mm variant that is similar to a Minigun using .30 caliber rounds (see the explanation of the Vulcan under Miscellaneous at the bottom of the page). Maybe this is the smaller gun.

To be honest, other than being able to turn off the safety and pull the trigger, I know jack about guns.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

The minigun is damned impressive. Imaging God ripping the world's largest canvas sail in two, accompanied by a 5-6 foot long flame out the muzzle.

It's just visceral.

Its actually a magnificent piece of High Tech engineering. Imagine the precision it takes for 6 barrels to be at the exact same location (down to 1/100 of a millimeter) 100 times per second.

I have never seen soldiers with these things so I wonder if they are used for serious business at all?

They are - but they are usually vehicle mounted. With the exception of movies, I don't think anyone has ever used one off of a vehicle mount.

They are used as door guns on helicopters, and mounted on ground vehicles in some circumstances.

In Vietnam, the AC-47 "Spooky" gunships sported 6 of these things pointed out the left side of the fuselage.

It's not a common weapon.

I´d say, because of my keen intrest towards history, the Suomi-SMG M1931.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

Well, if you want to go historical, I'd have to go for the MG-42. Quite an amazing piece of hardware that those Germans created.

My personal favorite when it comes to classics: The American-180 submachine gun with a smooth 275 rounds drum magazine on the top (largest capacity ever made), which means it can be fired non stop for 14 seconds. Modern Firearms - American-180 submachine gun
