The tax stamp is $200. A civilian transferrable class III firearm is $8,000 + depending on the gun.

Here's a good example of civilian transferrable market pricing: Class III Sales
Does this mean that ordinary people were allowed to purchase all the new full-automatic firearms they wanted before 1986?

Aren't there restrictions on shotguns too if they have a high magazine capacity or a short barrel with no buttstock?

No, there have been restrictions on fully automatic firearms for many years.

In 1986, the law changed so that no new fully automatic firearms could be transferred to a civilian, even with the ATF tax stamp.

A shotgun can have a barrel no shorter than 18 inches. Pistol grip shotguns with barrels of 18 inches or longer are permitted. There is no federal limit on magazine capacity, IIRC.

I guess the USAS-12 can be bought legally then. Asking price $3.200.

My understanding is that is basically a military prototype for trench warfare.

By the presence of a handgrip i'd say thats either a render, or the one from the movie predator.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

Wait... wait... someone mentioned self-defence and handcannon in the same sentence.

Why a big gun if you intend to keep some stupid thug away?

What more than a 9mm do you really need? This is something I don't get. Ok, so I've handled the 7.62mm AG3 and the 9mm MP5. Range is the biggest difference. Also, there's a big difference between the two when used inside a building. If someone came up to me in an alley attempting to harm me, I'd feel better holding 17 9mm rounds than 6 .45 rounds. If you hit someone, it's pretty much the same thing, isn't it? I tried the colt .45 a while back, and it wasn't quite as easy to handle as the 9mm luger.

The 9mm glock is what's commonly used by the armed forces in this country, and they ought to know what they're doing. What do the "experts" here think?

Even the most powerful handgun is a shadow of a rifle in terms of the ability to stop someone from doing what they are doing quickly.

That said, I prefer the .45, not because I think there is that much difference between the .45 and the 9mm in stopping power, but because the handgun I shoot most rapidly and accurately is the .45 I own.

With modern ammunition, the .45 is pretty good as far as handguns go for quickly stopping a threat. This is the stuff I keep in mine (8 in the magazine, 1 in the chamber): http://thegunzone.com/45hst.html

The Danish police used to carry Walther PP 7.65 mm. (like James Bond), but they had too many incidents where bad guys (in cars) couldnt be stopped or ran away after they have shot them in the legs. After the Danish police got their new Heckler & Koch 9 mm. pistols in 2000/2001 they have shot and killed at least 10 people with them, so I guess they just work better.

I see. Thanks. Never thought it'd be easier to shoot more rapidly with a .45. Accuracy should be more important than power. Shoot someone with a .45 or 9mm... can't see why there'd be much of a difference. Figure the effect is going to be pretty much the same.

But then again, what do I know. The criminals who own guns here are usually of the more experienced type anyway, and are more likely to deal with big stuff than robbing some random guy. I hope it stays that way.

If I were to shoot something, it'd be on four legs - and for the purpose of making a damn good meal.

It's all a matter of personal preference and familiarity.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

The problem with 9mm is that it's so high-velocity that it acts more like a piercing than anything (and has a tendency to kill innocents behind the target). A .45 has more stopping power, and less chance of carrying through a wall.

Anything that hits hard enough to stop a fight is going to readily penetrate most common building materials.

Curiously, research is showing that with modern ammunition, the 5.56mm rifle round is less hazardous to occupants in other rooms than 9mm. The 5.56 round is more energetic, but it breaks up as it passes through the wall. The fragments loose energy faster, and don't penetrate as many walls.

As to why the civilian version of the M-16, the AR-15 remains so popular today, is mind boggling. Unlike the military, civilians can have and use anything they want. So why do they chose the AR-15? Much better weapon would be the AR-180, the civilian version of the AR-18, what Armalite developed after fixing all the problems with the AR-15/M-16. You can buy a new AR-180B for about ½ the price or less than an AR-15. In my opinion the AR-180B is a much better rifle all around. It’s action is used in other guns, such as HK’s new G36 for example.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

One of the reasons I like the AR-15 is simplicity of design and readily available parts, both for maintenance and upgrades / personalization.

My all time favorite rifle is the H&K 91 (semi auto version of the G3). Because H&K was driven out of the US civilian rifle market by Clinton's "Assault Weapons" ban, those few H&K 91s that are available are prohibitively expensive, and my toy budget is limited.

Actually you can buy a Mac10 class III for only $3,495. I dont know why that particular model is so cheap. 240527-1
