Re: Whats your favorite firearm?
I almost forgot my favorite .22 rifle - I have an old Remington Nylon 66 behind my couch, and all gun collectors should have one of these. It was smuggled in from the U.S by some crazy sailor I used to know, and I seriously doubt that its legal here in Denmark.

The term sawn off shotgun generally refers to the barrel(s). IIRC, the shortest a long gun barrel can be is 18inches or so. Anything less is illegal or requires a permit. Sawing the barrel off a shotgun does two things. It makes it much more concealable and the shorter barrel allows for the shot pattern to open more dramatically especially at close range. For me, favorite gun that I own is a Browning Citori 525. 12gauge O/U. It is my baby, only gets used at the trap range. Ive got a few other 12gauges I use in the field. |

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?
I guess this is my new favorite firearm. No moving parts or black powder, but just rounds that are stacked and electronically ignited. Variable rates of fire ranging from semiauto to the equivalent of 45,000 rounds per minute. I think Im in love!

If I am not mistaken, what you have introduced is the firestorm. A very forward thinking weapons system, based on electronics instead of the traditional pin and primer system. if it could be feasible in the hands of individual soldiers, it would change the face of warfare. It is a matter of the US government funding it into further production. I am not %100 sure, but what happens when you point that firearm down. Do all of the projectiles fall to the ground? That’s an O’Dwyer VLe handgun prototype. Here’s some info on it. I believe it was a proof of concept and progenitor for Metal Storm. Since Metal Storm Limited is an Australian firm, they aren’t dependant on US funding. The projectiles are wedged into the barrel so there’s no movement or chance of them falling out. It’s basically a standard cartridge that uses the barrel as the casing. If you talk to anyone who has done any reloading, they’ll tell you the quickest way to trash a gun is to put too little powder in a cartridge. It tends to blow up barrels and receivers in worst-case scenarios. The amount of powder and air has to be strictly controlled. Projectiles that move inside a Metal Storm barrel could have potentially catastrophic consequences. I heard the Defense Department is testing a Metal Storm mounting on the Predator UAV.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?
Thanks for the info. It is an interesting concept and probably the next step forward in firearms. As you probably know, there are already firearms of various sizes that use electrical charge of some sort to ignite the primer. The military has them through the Phalanx system on ships and the A-10 gun. Remington also came out with a rifle using the same concept of an electric charge to fire a primer. I am not sure they are even in production any more. It does create a virtually instant lock time though.
As a trap shooter, having an instant lock time could potentially be very beneficial to the sport, or well me at least as a participant. One could only wonder what the cost of a nice over/under would go for with a different firing system. |

The Phalanx/Vulcan, (A-10) Avenger, GE Minigun, etc. are all basically updated versions of the Civil War era Gatling gun. They fire conventional rounds, but the old hand-crank has been replaced with an electronic motor. As the motor turns, each barrel is in a different stage of loading, firing, and ejection. The Remington Model 700 EtronX is similar in that the cartridge is electronically ignited, rather than using a traditional percussion cap. I’ve been wondering why there hasn’t been more work in this area, as it would seem to be well suited for snipers. I was thinking if they built a small transmitter into the ignition that set a signal to prepositioned receivers attached to blanks, they could mitigate the age-old problem of the rifle’s report giving away their position.

The simple concept of having an absolute zero lock time could really chang the sport, and eventually change the sport of shotgunning. |

Yeah, I think there are several more automatic shotguns out now as well. They may be largely impractical at this point, but the concept of an automatic shotgun is just cool.
