Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

Not exactly a firearm per se, but it would be fun to light the fuse on a Tsar Bomba (from a good distance).

Thanks, I am quite aware that although the basic concept is the same. Modern technology and efficiency have made some very impressive shooters.
While say a civil war or earlier shooter would probably be able to figure out how to load and shoot a modern one. Lightweight stocks, sabot bullets, powder pellets, and optics would be generally incomprehensible to them.
I am sure they would be blown away with how much faster and accurate it is.
I have long thought about the long since passed people and to see the reaction on thier face when they see what modern civilization now looks like.
A perfect example would be a Native that was apart of the trade deal for Manhattan. Lets wake him up after 400 years and say look what you traded for a mirror, beads and a hatchet.

I was just trying to draw a distinction between muskets, which were smoothbores, and rifles.

I have to agree with your other comment. After 400 years, the last thing a Native would want would be a mirror.

Fair enough, I understand your argument.
I, being quite aware of the evolution of modern firearms and its classifications. Was trying to keep terms in simple ones. That is why when you read my post you will find me quoting "musket" instead of using the more proper term of muzzle loader.

I cant expect a dude who knows little about what makes a musket a musket or a rifle a rifle and a muzzle loader vs. another type. I was making a general assumption.

CYD, in terms of talking guns, I would like to think of myself quite knowledgable. Quite honestly, you will find very few on this board who are more knowledgable than myself.

Quite in reality I rely on my firearms to provide me with a subsistence diet that I could not afford otherwise.

The fuse is actually a small nuclear bomb IIRC. They were capable of making the bomb 10 times more powerfull (500 MT) at the time, but the blast radius and radioactive fallout would have been too severe to test it.

I wonder how many people terrorists could kill with one of these things if they showed up at a concert or something, and fired a whole magazine into the crowd? 500 - 1000 perhaps?

Perhaps, but far fewer than an airhorn full of Novichok.

Sadly enough, Bunches of them, for sure. Thankfully the MK 19 is only available via the military. So for a terrorist to get thier hands on one would be difficult at best. It seems the RPG work just fine for thier needs.

It weighs in at 75 pounds, so its far from easily concealed or transported.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

it depends on the situation , as a basic battery for a varied number of uses

so to simplify -combat only

combat handgun - 1911a1 style .45ACP
combat rifle - M-16a2 / m203 underslung
combat shotgun - while I do like the SPAS guns , and with all due respect to the military's choices - winchester model 1300 riot configured

sniping - barrett light 50 - fully tricked out for covert/sniper usage

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s my favorite, but this has got to be the cutest assault rifle on the market: the new Kitty Cornershot.

You must realize that Civil War muzzle Loaders were called rifled Muskets, and early Winchester model 66, and a few other such repeaters and breechloading rifles when manufactured for military use, were also called Muskets.

My favorite rifle would be the M1 Garand, I once owned one and though sold at a profit I kick myself for letting it go. I hope to obtain another one day soon.
If I were willing to get the paperwork done and invest the cash, I'd like a BAR, preferably the later FND version with quick change barrels in several calibers.

Yes, you make an interesting point. Again, I was making generally accepted usage of the terms. In the US Civil War days, the term rifled musket comes from the fact that it had a rifled barrel and was loaded from the muzzle.
Also in those days the reference to a musket had to do with size. Whereas a "rifle" was the next size down, similar I imagine when compared with todays more common usage of rifle and carbine or SMG.

Excellent choices, I would like to crank off a few clips of a BAR. As I am writing this, I am watching a show on the MOH survivors from WWII. They had great love for the BAR, and I can only imagine the terror it must have been to be on the other side.

Re: Whats your favorite firearm?

I have my Father's Blue Jacket's Manual from WW2. He was in charge of foraging and supply parties at one time, getting needed fresh foods from Islanders and plantations on Pacific islands to suppliement navy stores.
The book has sections on the weapons used by shore parties and tactics used when engaged in combat patrols.
They still used the Lewis gun in his day as well as the BAR. I'll dig it out later and post scans of a few pages you'd know doubt find it interesting.
If i remember correctly each shore party carried two BARs when available, to set up crossfires. The rest of the crew were armed with the 03 Springfield. Dad generally carried the 1928 Navy model Thompson.
