He felt that naming oneself under a 'style' put a barrier around the person, making them inflexible to the vast uniqueness of man, and it would ultimately damage them in confrontation. He believed you should use only that which works, and take it from wherever you can get it.

Seriously, read up on him some more. He was a pretty fascinating guy.
Yes, he was. But the question lingers...could he beat Chuck Norris?

Re: Martial Arts Training

Haha, Return of the Dragon is one of my favorites.

I know Norris and a couple of other famous people trained under Lee for a time, even long after they'd been seasoned fighters and tournament winners. So who knows? For a while I was actually using Lee quotes in my signature, but I got kind of bored with them.

Gung Fu is definitley a great art to get going in. It's definitley great for shaping discipline and is excellent excercise as well. When I graduate I hope to get back into it, though I'm fairly certain I'll have to start over. Oh well.

I prefer Bloodsport personally, pathetic acting yes indeed, but I have yet to see a better made martial arts movie when it comes to the actual fighting.

Because it's coming from Chinese, the translation is a bit sketchy. However:

Re: Martial Arts Training

JHC,

Look on the bright side my friend - at least you won't have to worry to much when your daughter starts dating!

I went to ninjitsu (result of Bloodsport!) years ago. I always liked it because they trained you for a real fight (very little Kata) with things like bites, gouges (nose/eyes), grabs, and stamps (who said never kick a man while he's down).

At the start of each class you had to stand, arms outstretched, and take punches and kicks from fellow students to teach you what it was like to be hit. Ahhhhh, happy days.

I used to play rugby as well - does that count?

Originating in China as Gung Fu, it has an Americanized translation as 'Kung-Fu'. Both are acceptable.

Re: Martial Arts Training

I have trained in several arts over the years: Tae Kwon Do (because it's the law), hwarangdo, tai chi, white crane kung fu, (probably a few more I've forgotten), but most extensively in kenpo karate and budo taijutsu. I even teach on occasion, and still enjoy attending seminars in as many different arts as I can find.

Re: Martial Arts Training

There's a kenpo karate place right down my street that I'm thinking of. Tai-Chi is also something I've been looking at getting into. It's a little less expensive and I've never gotten into softer forms before.

Re: Martial Arts Training

I've been doing capoeira for almost a year and a half. Here's a video in case your don't know what it is: Rodas - capoeira. It's a great way to stay in shape and really fun to practice. BTW, it would be nice if you could all post links to videos of someone practicing the martial art you mentioned so we could see what it's like (cause all that chinese stuff sounds the same to me ).

Re: Martial Arts Training

I studied Tae Kwon Do for about 7 years to get a 2nd Dan. Then in college I worked as a bouncer in a very large bar and learned how to fight. I have been in about a dozen really good knockdowns in the twenty five years since then. I used to really enjoy it, but now I just ride a bicycle.
