Martial Arts Training

Greetings and Felicitations,

I was wondering who on the forum has martial arts training and what kind. I have a 2nd Black in Shotokan and Traditional Aikujutsu. I have spent a lot of time in study of Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū which is a traditional samurai school. I am getting ready to start studying Krav Maga.

Sincerely Yours,
C. David Neely

Re: Martial Arts Training

I've dabbled a little bit, but every time I get started I end up blowing out a joint, so I haven't progressed much. I've done:

Ki Aikido
Judo
Ninpo Tai Jutsu
Hap Ki Do

Once I get out of school and actually have money again, I think I'm going to get back into Aikido.

Re: Martial Arts Training

I just started Gung Fu several months ago. This is Bruce Lee's style which incorporates many martial arts but is unique. My daughter is fairly advanced and I was jealous.

Re: Martial Arts Training

I was a green belt in karate (Shotokan) when I was younger. I did it for about five or six years before high school got to be too demanding for me to keep it up. I didn't have enough time to practice and continue to advance. Once I finish my master's degree, I think I might take it up again though - it was a good way to stay in shape.

Re: Martial Arts Training

My friend is a Judoka Sensei, and thus I know the basics and some juicy tricks to use. And I am not listed Judoka, so their rules do not tie me.(in Finland martial art generally means the same as ¤knife in hand¤ and the ¤aggressor¤ even though the martial artists was mearly protecting him/herself. And it simply is not wise to break up a fight or prevent a rape, for the martial artist becomes accused for being the aggressor no matter the situation.

Re: Martial Arts Training

I did Judo for 14 years. Although, despite the common misconception, Just really isn't a martial art and is more just a sport in the vein of wrestling. I loved it though. Great exercise; great competition; teaches respect and discipline - like all martial arts.

I did Gung Fu for about 3 years post high school but never quite captured my black belt. Luckily, I spent most of my time working on my skills with the lower belts, so I can remember a lot of the elementary stuff to this day.

Gung Fu is a an ancient Chinese form of fighting. Lee started in Gung Fu growing up and became very skilled at it but developed his own eclectic style called Jeet Kune Do later on. Read up on that, as I think you'll like it a lot.

BTW, good to see another Bruce Lee fan around here.

Man, you said it. I don't think I've ever been in better shape than when I was doing Martial Arts (though I still exercise regularly). It's a heart workout like almost no other. Maybe once I finish school in the next few years I'll get back into it as well.

Re: Martial Arts Training

I used to train Taekwondo for a couple of years and I could make some of the best roundhouse and spinkicks in the club.

Lightbulb Re: Martial Arts Training

I can break a 2X4 with a punch, I can break a jaw with a back hand, I can throw a 250lb man over the hood of a car, so I assume I have a Belt in something?

I took the Military hand to hand course and now days you rarely fight hand to hand, but it saved my ass in Nam, so never refuse good training!

I suspect I am not the BADDEST SOB in the World, but I get XMAS cards from the guy that is

Did they ever figure out what happened to Bruce Lee? I think the Underworld got him, as he may have been undercover for some Nation?

My daughter would be able to straighten me out on that...as she does everything else . She is not quite 13 and she has a purple belt although in the adult class they don't give belts and she's passing into level three. Sifu says she is the youngest person he's ever trained as an adult.
I can't tell you how strange it is to see her on the other side of the room as me working with 6' 250lb men. She'd like to go to her first competition as an adult in Orlando soon and I'm a little worried.

that is what bruce lee started learning in his younger years. when he was older he developed 'jeet kun do' but was very reluctant to name it as a style, because as he has written, there are really no different styles of fighting.

Re: Martial Arts Training

Once upon a time (back in HS & college) I had a 1st degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. I haven't kept it up though; I suspect a green belt would kick my butt in sparing now.

Jeet Kune Do. He took some of his Gung Fu and mixed it with some western boxing and fencing footwork, with a little bit of grappling. It was very eclectic.

But even then, shortly before he died, Lee dismissed JKD as an art form. He found his ultimate truth in that the true meaning of martial arts was not in a form, or style, but in individual journey. He felt that naming oneself under a 'style' put a barrier around the person, making them inflexible to the vast uniqueness of man, and it would ultimately damage them in confrontation. He believed you should use only that which works, and take it from wherever you can get it.

Seriously, read up on him some more. He was a pretty fascinating guy.
