Kiev region WWII Battleground artifacts

This is a pretty interesting website for you WW2 history buffs. It is run by a young woman whose hobby is exploring and excavating battleground sites in and around Kiev, which saw heavy fighting during WW2 both with the Nazi advance and subsequent retreat. She unearths old weapons and equipment, and in some cases skeletal remains. Thor, this one is right down your alley my friend.

Re: Kiev region WWII Battleground artifacts

I'd be a little concerned about digging in an area with all that UXO.

Wouldn't think that this girl has any experience in excavating live munitions as she claims this is just a hobby.

Cool site but I hope she doesn't blow herself up some day.

One thing the Russians have that we don't (and surely wish they did not) are several relatively fresh battlegrounds to explore.

Be a simple farmer, digging in the ground on your potatofield and there we find a few skulls and bones.

Re: Kiev region WWII Battleground artifacts

it is also interesting to note that the Russians did take care to give the German soldiers a proper burial, on Russian land no less.

I've seen her website before, she rides a motorcycle through Chernobyl, blasting through empty streets, she has to ride alone, because the dust is radioactive, so it's OK for one person, but anyone behind her would be inhaling plutonium.

Cool, that's the same person? I visited her Chernobyl-homepage a few years ago. It was very interesting.

Great site, there!

I only hope she uncovers the skeletal remains and helps them towards their proper burial grounds.

Re: Kiev region WWII Battleground artifacts

Fennica I believe she mentions Wehrmacht ID tags she finds, which were similar to Finnish Army ID tags far better than the Red Army's method, which was a piece of paper in a glass tube. I know that several such battlefield explorations also took place in Finland - I remember a story of Red Army Soldiers' remains being found standing up - they were killed instantly and buried alive in their positions by a Finnish artillery round.

Re: Kiev region WWII Battleground artifacts

You do know quite a lot.
I am surprised, as our battlefronts don't usually see too much attention(like the Ukranian battlefields).
These search and bury-expeditions usually uncover unindentified remains of a Soviet trooper, but on occation a Finn. Both Russians and Finns work together on those grounds, but we have next to none of these "tombraiders".
