Soviet Mi-24 Hind

I recently started to edit some of the videos I have taken in the last year or so, and am throwing them up on YouTube. And since many of them are going to be military in nature, I thought I would share it with others.

The first one I uploaded is a video I shot in April of 2008. My unit was conducting Joint Forces operations, and I got to spend some time with the Marine STINGER operators.

This video is from that, and features an actual Soviet made Mi-24 HIND-D in operation. It made several passes of our position, as you can see quite close by. It really is an impressive aircraft.

Re: Soviet Mi-24 Hind

Great vid! I remember always thinking that Hinds were really big birds. Then I actually got the chance to crawl around one and realized they weren't as big as I thought.

Good stuff.

Just rewatched Red Dawn recently and if I recall correctly, Mi-24s are the helicopters that attacked them near the end..

Yea, they sure were.

Red Dawn was actually taken with copying the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and moving it to the United States. And the tactics and operations were very similar.

Just like the invasion, the movie started with the Soviets comming in, their transport aircraft following commercial flight paths, and transponders tuned to commercial frequencies and signals.

And in both, the had initial supremacy. But as time went on, insurgent activity started to take it's toll. And in response, they got more brutal, and started to operate both traps to catch them, and increased HIND patrols.

The HIND was really tearing them up, until Good Time Charile got the US to send them STINGER. That changed everything. The "Flying Tank" lost it's invulnerable reputation, and the STINGER became a combat-proven weapon.

They are currently filming a remake of Red Dawn, with a September 2010 release date. This time though, it will be the Chinese that invade. I hope it is half as good as the original was.

Liked the movie, but good is not an adjective suitable to describe it. It's one of those "nice" crappy movies.

Anyway have to wait until I'm home to see the youtubevid, but always like the Hind from a "design" standpoint.

say what you will about the russians but that was one bad ass helo. if I recall correctly, an old saying from the russo-afghan war. an afghani fighter said;" I am not afraid of the russians, but I am afraid of their helicoptors".

I honestly and truly spent the first half of that movie expecting Alfie O'Meaghan and John Doe to show up. I first saw it in 1992 on tv and, never having heard of it before, thought it might be a made for tv movie version of "Nth Man, the Ultimate Ninja", with this strange subplot thrown in. How else do you disable the entire nuclear arsenals of every nation in the world?

There was a nuclear exchange in the movie, it just wasn't shown...

Right. Didn't China get nuked? Some lines like

Air Force dude: "We also have 600 million screaming Chinese on our side"

Wolverine fighter: "But I thought there were 1 billion Chinese?"

Air Force dude: "There was"

Yea, exactly like that. Plus, I believe they hinted at cities on the east coast being obliterated, as well. The air force guy also said something along the lines of "the war is all conventional now", which obviously hints to the fact that it wasn't at some point...

Re: Soviet Mi-24 Hind

R ya sayin they just used a modified Eurocopter when they shot Rambo 3?

The one Rambo flew in First Blood 2 looked a lot like a Bell from the Vietnam war...

That was supposed to be a HIND-D, but at the time they were unavailable for movies (Cold War, still a current combat helicopter). So they took French Helicopter (as Stapo said, an SA 330 Puma) and tweaked it a bit to try and make it look like a HIND.

Although to somebody that knows what to look for, the differences are obvious. The biggest one is that the HIND is a Front-Back seating arrangement, while the PUMA is side to side seating.

The same trick was used in Rambo II and Red Dawn.

I bet the one Rambo flew in FB II was nothing but a modified Bell. Anyway, the Hind reminds me of one of my favorite PC chopper simulators - Apache Longbow from 1995.
