The "greatest guitarists" thread took a bit of a turn today and I think the topic deserves its own thread.
Which songs, in your opinion, are so bad, so overplayed or have gone so stale over the years that the writers and performers should hang their heads in shame.
From the other thread we already have votes for Stairway to Heaven, Freebird and Smoke on the Water. All of those certainly deserve to be mothballed and not brought out until you are halfway through your second case of Hamms but I can't really say that they have a "cheese grater" effect on me as much as some others.
My list would have to include-
- Shirley Ellis - The Name Game
- Teddy Pendergrass - Turn Out the Lights (maybe the cheesiest song ever written)
- Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive
- Scorpions - Rock You like a Hurricane

May I object?
Yes, it's uber cheesy, I completely agree. But that is part of what makes it great!Teddy Pendergrass - Turn Out the Lights (maybe the cheesiest song ever written)

"The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort." -- Robert E. Heinlein
Feel free to object.....but you're still wrong
Teddy Pendergrass was a great performer but :
??? really?Let's take a shower, shower together, yeah
I'll wash your body and you'll wash mine, yeah
Rub me down in some hot oils, baby, yeah
And I'll do the same thing to you
This tune just screams out for zebra skin wallpaper, cheap incense, cheaper wine and a disco ball. If you want "mood music" you've always got MFSB or Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes (where Pendergrass really shined like a diamond!).
I mean, Turn out the Lights is certainly a better choice than I Want to know what Love Is by Foreigner (which needs to be added to the list) but Foreigner never had any talent to squander in the first place.
I may get some shit for this, but pretty much anything from Pink Floyd. One of the many bands utterly destroyed by college kids.

Well, that depends. If you are talking about Pink Floyd in general then yes, you wholly deserve heaping helpings of shit but if, on the other hand, you are talking about Pink Floyd after the departure of Roger Waters then there's something to be said for that position.
I'll give you this....the song "Another Brick in the Wall" absolutely falls into the grossly overplayed category.

Admittedly, I'm not a huge Floyd fan, so I haven't listened to all their stuff. I could at least respect what they did, though. But, pretty much most of their radio hits are so played out they make me want to punch my ears. "Another Brick in the Wall" is probably the best example, yes.

Pick anything sung by Tony Orlando or William Shatner singing Dylan. Rock Around the Clock needs to beretired. Many better songs from the 50's
