Re: Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin killed by stingray

Aside from the physical injury itself, which can be very serious, Stingray barbs are also venomous.

The venom caused a heart attack. Fatalities from stingray barbs virtually all occur when the torso is struck.

he loved and respected animals, and the environment. just saw a tribute interview on Enough Rope, originally screened in 2003.

he was really an amazing guy. such a loss.

The report I just read on Discovery's website says the barb actually penetrated under his ribcage and into the heart muscle.

A freak occurrence to be sure.

My friends death was due to liver failure caused by the venom. He probably wouldn't have died but his liver was already bad from Hepatitis C.

Re: Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin killed by stingray

What really sucks is that its so rare to actually die from a stingray attack (Well, not rare enough anyway), here is a guy who was taught to defend himself from certain death, and a freak accident like this happens. Something that could happen to anyone caught unaware. Apparently he accidently boxed in a stingray he didn't know was there because it was covered by sand, and was struck in the chest. Damn.

Though i feel for his loss. I was saddened the time he dangled his toddler for tv in front of those crocodiles.

I lost all intrest in him and thought he was a mad man after that.

It sickened me.

We did that at a park in Cozumel. Kind of spooky now to look back on

I hope animal planet will have a “Crocodile Hunter” marathon.
Every time we watched his show we had that eek smiley look on our faces.

That was such a media beat up. If you say the footage from a different angle, you would have seen that he was about 3-4 metres away; not as close as it appeared in some footage. And, as he said in an interview, his kids are growing to grow up surrounded by these creatures, so they need to learn all about them.

On a separate note, it has just been reported in Australia that because they were filming a segment on dangerous animals for a new series, his death has been captured on film. For the sake of good taste and media integrity I sincerely hope that it is not shown. That would be disgusting.

Re: Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin killed by stingray

From all accounts, he was genuinely very dedicated to his job.

He died doing something he loved to do.

There are worse ways to leave this life.....
