Thread: Name Restrictions

    Name Restrictions

I came across a thread on another forum in which I learned that Germany, Denmark, and a bunch of other countries tightly regulate what first names parents can give their children. I did a little searching and came up with some information:

Germans are used to being regulated in many areas of daily life that Americans might find rather repressive. Want to name your baby? Better pick a name that the local Standesamt (office of vital statistics) agrees with. If they don't agree to register the name you picked, you have to appeal the decision. By German law, a child's name has to meet two conditions: (1) it must reflect the sex of the child, and (2) it must not endanger the “well-being of the child.”

Among other things, cross-gender names like Devin, Taylor, and Casey are out. Does anyone else think (as I do) that governmental intervention into such a personal matter is way over the line? Of course, if we had similar regs, it would have saved Frank Zappa’s kids from some embarassment.

It's a free country and people should name their kids whatever they like.

However as a parent you take on the responsibility for whatever emotional scars might result.

I have to hand it to African Americans for coming up with the most creative first names collectively.

I agree. It's takes masterful skill in blending French, African, and ghetto influences to come up with gems like Lashawniqua.

    Well, it's two edged sword.

Basically, I think those rules make sense. But on the other hand is is basically the job of the parents to come up with a name for their child.

But as far as I know the regulation on this is not very restrictive. If you choose some cross-gender name, then you can add a second one, like "Taylor Frank" for example, at least for the files.

Just curious, what did the Standesamt think when your parents tried to name you "Malvolio"?

I happen to think it's only a one-edged sword, that of the government, in it's infinite benevolence, protecting you and yours from yourself. How much control of your own life are you willing to abdicate?

I think you are looking for "So would I", as in you would have laughed your ass off too.

    I suppose it's possible.
What I was trying to say was I am laughing my ass off, the way the other asshole was laughing his ass off. So, I suppose I should have written "so am I". But then "so do I" is tempting too, because it could mean "I do lmao the way the other fucker did lmao". I got that far and got stuck.

Or you could have simply said "me too".

    Re: Name Restrictions

I don't think the government should regulate names.

But I do think that there should be a roaming Name-Fairy who stalks parents who give their kids stupid names and beats them with a clue-by-four.
First they came for the mimes, and I did not speak out, because I was a mime.
