It was some kind of security update from MS and after I rebooted, it couldn't locate my drives.

It may have been a fluke (I'm running multiple drives), I haven't had a problem since.

Re: Attention _ Vista _users!!

Did you go to setup before booting? I had a situation once, a few years ago where Windows didn't show any drives but BIOS reported both of them.

This just in...

Apparently, you shouldn't be too anxious for MS to issue a fix. LINK

On all Microsoft technicians computer's the tilda (~) sign is a text string...."We apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing our users.”...this saves them hours of typing everyday.

Re: Attention _ Vista _users!!

Any idea where I can get XP or Ubuntu drivers for a HP DV6704NR? I have dual boot XP and Ubuntu on another box and am slowly migrating over. This Vista crap on the new laptop is making me nuts.

Also, how can one make Vista restore to a smaller partition? I don't believe in data on a C drive.

Re: Attention _ Vista _users!!

Try HERE. It seems to be the best place to start for Ubuntu, and they have a lot of knowledge on dual-boot setups.

Re: Attention _ Vista _users!!

It's interesting that so many people seem anti-XP{I can appreciate the anti-Vista}....I updated to XP home in 2002, then XP pro in 04, and I'm still on XP pro and pretty happy overall, in fact, I haven't done a reformat since mid 2005.

My next PC is around the corner, and will be built to play Crysis at 1920x1200 on my 26in LCD, so I thought I'd grab Vista and see how it goes

Nothing wrong with XP, but there is nothing wrong with Vista. It works for the majority of its users, which is who its written for. Its not written for mac users or linux users, or people with printers from 1980, or still using Quicken 2.

FYI, I played Crisis on Vista just fine, though I cant run that high a res. From what I understand Crisis cant run on full detail on any computer made yet.

There are generally things wrong with any OS. It seems to me that there is plenty "wrong" with Vista (I'm not any kind of OS brand loyalist) from an objective standpoint. In my sphere as a professional developer, there has been minimal interest in adoption of Vista with the exception of strategic Microsoft partners. Our company did a cost benefit analysis of updating some development machines to Vista and found it not to be worth the problems. As a matter of fact, we have officially refused to support some of our commercial products for customers that upgrade to Vista (I was part of such meetings - the potential loss of customers or customer ill-will is not worth the cost of upgrading and making our software and hardware compliant with a still buggy OS that requires an unprecedented amount of resources to run).

For users who enjoy ribbons and gaming, I'm sure there is nothing "wrong" with Vista, but commercially, at least among my industry contacts and their companies, it is a flop, so far. It doesn't seem to offer any appreciable professional benefit the way their OS upgrades did in the past (XP and Windows 2000 both offered singificant enhancements for development, as did some of their server OS upgrades).

Edit: And, I have 4 MSDN developer licenses, so there is no "familiarity" reason for me to chafe at this - I deal with different UI's and with Microsoft products constantly. A new interface for Office 2007 is hardly a source of concern for me.

Re: Attention _ Vista _users!!

There's a very good read here:

News events Windows XP and Vista - Peter Bowey Computer Solutions

Microsoft has indicated that a XP Service Pack 3 will be released in the first half of the year 2008.

Current know shortcomings of Windows VISTA:

A need for significant hardware upgrades and new stable device drivers.
Many third party applications still not supported.
Too many Vista editions (why is this?).
Is significantly different from Windows XP and so there is a learning curve.
Requires about 2 GB of Memory to run well.
Hardware vendors are taking their own time to provide support for Vista.
Buried controls - requiring a half a dozen mouse clicks to perform a task.
Installation can take many hours, and with upgrades much more.
Paranoid Security and Administration issues performing Networks and Installations.
New technical difficulties performing essential software maintenance and repairs.

On the subject. Found it here:

Sounds pretty opinionated. Ont he subject of installation time, mine took 10 minutes. I was amazed. Of course I didnt do the stupid thing and upgrade from a previous OS. Thats always been asking for trouble.

Knowing Microsoft's, shall we say, aggressive marketing of new products, I'm wondering if this upgrade might actually DOWNgrade XP and make Vista look a little better to people who are sticking with XP.

At this point, I'm not going to even consider installing SP3 until I've done a LOT of research on it, and definitely not until it's been out a while.

I may be paranoid, but Microsoft hasn't given me too much reason not to be.

You're all way too cynical. Vista beats XP.

If you wanna attack Microsoft, do it on their business conduct, not their products.

Attack Microsoft? I don't really understand why people get all twisted up over the OS on their machines. Personally, I regularly wipe OS's and install other ones, and I have access to dozens of them. Pointing out the problems with Vista (or any OS) isn't an "attack".
