The USPOL Traveling Item

A while ago, I was a member of (and moderator for) a different, non-political discussion forum which has since gone away.

Anyway, one thing that we had going before the forum was closed down by the owners was what we called the "travelling teddy." This was a stuffed monkey that one of our members in the UK had purchased, and we were passing along from member to member (among those who had signed up beforehand) around the world. It had actually made it all across Europe, to Australia and New Zealand, and then to Canada and finally to the US before the guy that got it dropped off the planet and the teddy was lost.

Given our fairly diverse, more adult membership, I thought that it might be kind of cool to try something like this among the USPOL membership, and I'd volunteer to coordinate.

The way it would go is that I'd go buy something (still to be decided), and then take a picture or a few of the object and somewhere that shows something about where I live; the top of Loveland pass, or Aspen, or something along those lines. I'd then box up the object, and send it on to the next member on the list, who'd do the same thing, etc. With the teddy, we actually had people adding a little decoration to him as well; we had a flag from a Danish Home Guard uniform, etc.

So, if we're able to recruit several members, I'd like to go ahead and serve as the coordinator. I'd collect addresses (no, I wouldn't send hate mail or distribute them), organize the route, deal with issues that come up, etc.

My thoughts on the object have gone back and forth. The stuffed monkey took more interesting pictures, but it occurred to me that maybe a book in which we could all write something, and which ultimately would end up with Marc as a momento of the forum would be kind of cool.

At this time, if you think you'd be interested, please indicate such on the poll. We do have international members, so indicate if you'd be willing to ship internationally, either within the continent you're on (i.e. Canada - US, within EU) or just domestically. If you're not interested, well, that's OK, too!

re: The USPOL Traveling Item

A friend of mine went on a cruise recently and was going to take one my garden gnomes with her but things got hectic and I forgot to take it to her. I really wanted one of those little fellows to be photographed on all the islands she visited.

Sounds like fun!

I'll put him in a clog with a joint in his mouth in a tulip field next to a windmill. So cheesy!

Maybe we can pick something where we can also write our name on. Sew a long thin ribbon on him as tail.

The book is an interesting idea. If you could find one that looks good in a picture, that might be the way to go.

Brilliant idea pram - maybe you aint as boring as I thought you were...

Some sort of "Yes we can - support Obama" monkey would sit well with me. Maybe not among others though.
