Wheel of Time Series.

For those who are fans of the Wheel of Time and aren't aware...

There are three books coming out that finish the series. The first of the three has come out and I'm currently reading it. Robert Jordan had dictated much of the story from his hospital bed and his family knew the full story. His wife called Brandon Sanderson to help finish were Jordan left off. It felt weird, to me, to pick up a book that wasn't fully written by Jordan. Even with that apprehension, I have enjoyed it so far ( page 141 of 760).

Ugh bad memories about this serie.

I read till book 9 or something, the first 4 or 5 were good then it became one giant waste of time. I remember books of a 1000 pages which could almost be left out without really missing anything.

Yep...I enjoyed it immensely up to about book 6 and then it got very bogged down. I still read the rest of them and enjoyed parts. I know exactly what you are talking about. I kept going because I knew it would pick up, at the finish, and I had to see it through. I also enjoy some of the characters a lot.

Ack! Ptui! If you really enjoy fantasy series, I can recommend some (not that you might not already have read them) but the Wheel of Time is the scut-monkey Jackie Collins of that genre.

There is soooooo much better out there.

I wouldn't wish that series on even, say.... Swoop187.

I've wanted that series to end for years and, until this post inspired me to do some digging, I had no idea he was sick, much less dead. I just figured he wound too many threads into the plot and had no idea how to end the series.

In the first three books, events seem to happen pretty quickly, and then things drastically slow down and complicate. It appeared to me that he went from shooting for a 3-5 book series to seeing how long he could milk the thing. I read the first three books probably 15-16 years ago, and then hit the point where there weren't any more, so I waited. After a few came out, I re-read the first ones and got to the end, then waited again. I repeated this once more and then resolved not to bother again until the series was really, truly finished.

Given that it's now apparently complete, I'll probably go back and read all of them. Do you know when the other two come out?

Re: Wheel of Time Series.

Wiki has an estimation and since it is already outlined and the other two books have estimated word counts I'd say they are basically done and are being delayed more for publication purposes than the need to finish them up.

I would very much take some recommendations. You have me scared a little bit if you don't like the Jordan series. I understand that it got ridiculous but the beginning books were amazing.

I would not mind the thread commenting on this subject being derailed into a thread on favorite fantasy books. I have much better results buying books on recommendation than just trying to find them on my own. I'll start out with some of my own.

I've only read three sci-fi books (all on recommendation) and generally steer away from them but I will toss one out.

Re: Wheel of Time Series.

Try the Hyperion series (strictly sci-fi, not fantasy like Feist and Robert Jordan).

I've prolifically read a lot of those authors - Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, Fesit, David Eddings, RA Salvatore and so on. There's a woman named JV Jones that wrote some interesting novels/series. If I think of it later, I'll peruse my book collection at home for interesting names.

Start, for fantasy, with the 'Game of Thrones' series by a George R. R. Martin. Also, the Books of the New Sun (The Torturers Apprentice, etc...) by the incomparable Gene Wolfe.

I have the 1st book of Game of Thrones and accidentally spilled water on it and it expanded and warped and it annoyed me. It's still able to be read though. I'll have to pick it up once I get done with this one. I wasn't overly fond of some of the characters in the book, namely the king that is an incompetent drunk.

Re: Wheel of Time Series.

Finished the book. I don't know how much of it was Robert Jordan's and how much was Brandon Sanderson but it was pretty good. There is still a lot to tie up in the last two books. It will be interesting to see how it can be pulled together in two more books.
