Well that helps. We all admire her for breaking a glass ceiling and you say she had a man shamfully married to her to help her advance as she couldn't do it as an open (or even closeted) lesbian.

One day, i want to try this business of getting up on a cross / self inferiority / persecution complex. It looks like a shitload of fun ; all be it at a dead woman's expense, here.

Nope. Just said it was a scenario equally as likely as her cheating on a husband that was completely unaware of her actions. There is no basis of support for either supposition. It is obvious that she was a woman of strong moral fortitude either way, with all that she accomplished and her choice to spend her life encouraging children to reach for higher goals.

Err no it was pretty clear she was a woman of abysmal moral fortitude...well at least if the numbers and dates add up. How is it that just because she is a lesbian (well, bi unless we actually want to accept her entire marriage was a sham) you are giving her cheating ass a free pass and saying the husband may have been complicit? The next time heterosexual men or women get adulterous is the first assumption to come mind that the significant other was a willing deviant accessory?

Or was it because the first marriage was a sham (and career advancing as you suspect) that you figure he was in on it all? Either way, it shows her to be a repugnant moral deviant. She sure had a great career with NASA. But your theory about her being a model to young gays etc...she is about the worst person i would think to be a role model to young people. Right next to Larry Craig and above maybe Michael Jackson and below John Edwards.

Are we really going to turn this into a thread about the sanctity of marriage?

Unique wasn't really the one making into a discussion on homosexuality. Also, you're being a little hard on the departed here. I have no firsthand knowledge of what it's like to be a woman or gay, but I imagine doing both in NASA in the early 80s was pretty tough.
All good socialists have villas in Southern France. That's not the point.

Turns out the numbers do NOT add up. The gentleman that posted that she partnered with O'Shaughnessy in 1985 and did not divorce until 1987 does not have his facts straight at all. She divorced in 1986 and began her relationship with O'Shaugnessy in 1986. The family may well have rounded when they said 27 years... just like if someone asked me how long I've been with my wife I may well answer 13 years instead of 12 years and 7 months.

    Sally Ride

What is morally repugnant is defecating all over the memory of a good person without really knowing the first thing about what they may have been through in their personal lives. I'd bet that we ALL know people that we consider upstanding who have cheated.

Actually that is the part you were talking squarely out of your ass on, when you said no-one other than close family knew she had cancer and the fact she had been gay, until before then. Court records seem to indicate the reasons for divorce were issues of trust and commitment and that it was not a no fault divorce. But just because the rest of us don't have to get up a high horse talking about homosexuality all day every day, doesn't mean it doesn't pass our attention ; we just don't obsess over it like you do all day every day.

As for what is really morally repugnant, well...ah forget it, i can't be bothered with this ridiculous charade. Nobody really cares and i am sure anybody who wants to can insert their own relevant one liner of what is "really" the issue of the said pejorative or adjective like any other set of talking points going back between a figure head of either side. Some day it would be nice to have some originality but i doubt any of us would hold our breathe.

Edit: To give an example of it : where you said how long you define your relationship with your wife, instead of addressing the issue, i could just say "the real issue of how long you and her have been together is more to do with the fact that she is not your wife at all, that i nor the state or any other non mythical based entity recognizes her as such either, and you talking about it as such shows you really know nothing of law"...see how easy it is to come out with this cringe worthy crap? I was going to say "crap you are renown for" but God knows i don't need to give you one more reason to cry rape and play the victim card.

You are right...and i shouldn't get down into the gutter like this. It isn't fair on the poor deceased woman who did a lot for NASA, and with whatever afflictions she may have gone through i am certain it is best to leave it at that. I have said my piece here, shame it ended up here.

Unless you know exactly what the cause of the divorce is... well let's just say that your ass has pretty fair speech skills as well. In fact... even if she did cheat... to say that makes her morally repugnant is just not reasonable. I love people who are so perfect and have never wronged another human that they can so easily pass judgement on others.

One thing I've learned in life is that I am not perfect. When we accept that, it makes it a lot easier to accept and forgive other people's imperfections. It's something that took me YEARS to learn. To get personal here for a moment... my own father was a cheater. If someone walked up to me today and told me that he was a morally repugnant person because of that one aspect of his life... honestly I'd probably punch them in the face. He was a great person who raised seven children with a great amount love and patience. Only two were biologically his, but if you ever asked him... they were all his children exactly the same. He could have made more money in life, he certainly had all the right connections to get ahead; but instead he became a cop because it was his life long dream. He put his life on the line to live his dream and was even shot once. He was a great human... but human just the same and subject to all of the insecurities and foibles that every normal human has. His cheating was never admirable... but he was an admirable man none the less.
