Sadly, McCain has been gelded - all the maverick quirks that I liked have disappeared. He plays the game now, says what big donors want to hear, and really has no appeal left.

In fact, there really is no one who doesn't play the game - which means whoever we elect is going to be in bed with whoever they got their millions from. My preference is a mixed govt - I'll take a Dem president, repub senate, and dem house - though president is really the least important in a lot of ways. No more one party control - if congress stays Dem, then I will vote repub.

I am following the same strategy. I believe that a divided gov't is ultimately the best.

IMHO, McCain is a true american hero. But sadly, americans elect the government they deserve.

Did you see McCain on Letterman? He let his true self out for a minute in trying to bash Rumsfeld, and said American soldiers lives had been "wasted". He issued a "correction" today. Obama is defending him, saying he just mispoke. (That's when you know you're on the ropes, when the second-tier Dem candidates feel sorry for you.)

I think McCain was finished with this race before he started; although technically he hasn't officially declared his candidacy yet.

So you vote based on who the other side of the same branch of government has in office at the time?? Anyway how are you gonna know whether the Congress will remain with the Dems seeing as the vote for the Presidency an new Congress is all on the same day?

That may be true on the republican side of the fence because I don't believe that it will be Giuliani and I KNOW that it won't be McCain.

However, on the democratic side, there is no stronger candidate waiting in the wings.

Re: 2008 Presidential Republican Primary

I would have preferred Christine Whitman if she were running, but I'd settle for Rudy. At least he knows how to "keep the trains running on time," unlike any other Republican President since Roosevelt.

Unfortunately, the GOP looks desperate and ridiculous right now, with Mitt-for-brains and the other Coulter-loving political dwarfs in the race.

Re: 2008 Presidential Republican Primary

This is a really sorry field of candidates. Giuliani and McCain I'm suspicious of because they flip-flop all over the place about abortion and domestic values, depending on what audience they're talking to. Plus, they both seem to support the war. Does America really want to go with a pro-war candidate?

I like Chuck Hagel, but other than his stance on the war, he's far right. Against a woman's right to choose, against gay marriage but doesn't want to change the constitution, votes with Bush on every fucking tax cut for the wealthy.

I haven't seen a more sorry field of Republican candidates ever. No one, not even Giuliani is getting anyone excited as much as Clinton, Obama, Edwards or even Richardson is on the other side.

Right this moment, gotta lean with Giuliani. His stance on abortion is the best. He encourages life, but thinks in the end that women ought to have freedom first. Listening to him explain it is lovely. He's sensible and moderate.

Re: 2008 Presidential Republican Primary

I think it's amazing. When a Republican becomes likable by the left they start flip flopping like a fish out of water. McCain, Guiliani, and Mitt for brains. Voters are tired of the pussies on the left and the morons on the right.
