Agreed.

No, there are nuances in how they each want to control our wallets, speech, bedrooms, and lives in general.

Most sincere calls for 'ending partisanship' really mean an end to name-calling, automatic nay-saying, and selecting policy stances based more on political advantage than on actual issues.

Republicans are 'cold-hearted', Democrats are 'un-American'. Democrats oppose tax cuts because Republicans propose them. Republicans oppose military cuts because Democrats propose them. I'm sure many Democrat politicians oppose our actions in Iraq, but either way, they'll say they do because it makes Bush look bad. I'm sure many Republican politicians disapproved of Clinton lying under oath, but either way, they said they did just to make him look bad. And so on.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, Most calls for an 'end to partisanship' are really a political smokescreen to try to limit criticism from the other ruling party.

Re: End The Partisanship!!!

I just heard about this and wanted to pass it on.

It appears to be an attempt to create a bi-partisan party.

Actually, it's shorthand for Just Kidding aka J/K. But we know that internet jargon isn't your strong point.

Re: End The Partisanship!!!

It kind of feels like the country wants bipartisanship and compromise, but instead they get deadlock in the Senate about debating the war, which is exactly what Americans seemed to be voting for in November. Republicans and Democrats are both guilty of being stupid, but mostly I feel that Republicans get away with it because they seem so confident all the time, even if they're dead wrong. Democrats are more prone to think things over, look at many perspectives. That makes them seem wishy-washee to some, but I think it's useful to stop and think.

There are partisan stigmas that need to be looked at too. For instance, Bill Clinton actually reduced the size of government while Bush vastly expanded it, yet, Democrats are portrayed as big gov't and Republicans as being for small gov't.

Never mind that Clinton didn't balance the budget until the first Republican HR in 40 years took power and forced him to.

Re: End The Partisanship!!!

I'm not so sure that disbanding the Republican party is such a hair-brained or bad idea. It's been so seriously hijacked, it hardly resembles anything that used to be Republican; freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Today the Republican party has become an instrument for fascism, fundamentalism, and war criminals.

It's really sad what has happened to the Republican party, I can only think of about a handful of really decent Americans who are still Republican Congressmen, the rest have become sheep, to some misguided, vacuous, fundamental idealism, that threatens peace and stability around the world.

Maybe it's time for both the Republican and Democratic Parties to change their names, to better reflect their present idealism. The Republican Party would change to the Social Conservative Party, and the Democratic Party would change to the Social Democratic Party.

Something's got to change.

Re: End The Partisanship!!!

Very interesting post AA. I wonder though if the two big parties could split further. I mean the Republican Party could probably split into a conservative party, as you indicate, but then would the moderates in the Republican Party be happier with some of the more conservative people from the Democratic Party I wonder? They could probably be a sort of Progressive Conservative Party (I'm conscious of the fact that Canada had a PCP as well, I don't know if this hypothetical is close to that party). Then the Democratic Party could become, as you indicate, a Social Democratic Party.

Now I wonder if such a spread would be functional in the US political system and there I'll leave it because while I studied US politics at university it was a long time ago, I'll leave it to those with more contemporary knowledge to comment.

It's a matter of opinion. Either way, I wasn't being serious.
