Your friend's parents were permanent resident aliens, even if they were not citizens, they were not here illegally. I have no problem with your friend's citizenship. It is an interesting question and I have had to revise my views over the years because of similar situations. I by no means want to deny people who are here lawfully anything.

EXACTLY and if I heard some better solutions to the anchor baby problem I may be inclined to revise my opinion once again. Do you know of any better solutions? Simply put, I would much rather grant citizenship to children born of non citizens who are here legally.

I don't know of any perfect solution; I can only recommend a more serious attempt at border enforcement.
Removing the offer of citizenship to those born on US soil just strikes as too general a solution for such a specific problem.

A lot of people haven't thought this through. America slammed the doors to immigration shut in the 1920's, and it creates a situation where the Democratic party dominates.
back before the 1920's the worst low paying crap jobs were being done by immigrants who couldn't vote. The doors to immigration were closed in the 1920's, with the result that the low paying jobs in the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's were being done by citizens who could vote, the result was the social safety net, unemployment insurance, social security, welfare, medicare, etc.
The Republican rise to power occurred in a time when tens of millions of low paying jobs were being done immigrants, legal and illegal, and none of them could vote. The result was that almost 20 million workers with the lowest paying jobs couldn't vote.
Close the doors, and after a while everyone's a citizen, and when that happens, the 20 million people with the lowest paying jobs will vote, Do you really think they'll vote to cut taxes?

This opens up a Pandora's box. For instance, two foreigners could legally come to the US on a tourist visa (legally), and have a kid. By your definition, the kid would be a US citizen ... That opens up a lot of possibilities for abuse. Same goes for H1B visa workers ... Or are you referring only to green card holders?

In fact, several developed nations (NZ, for instance) have already done away with this rule. The US has already gotten stricter on issuing permanent residence cards, and I'm pretty sure it will follow suit, at some point ...

Um...actually, that's the way it already is in the US.
Anyone born on US soil is automatically a US citizen, even the kids of tourists.

I know thats the way it is. - I should have said after the first sentence, and the US probably will too.

However, I was simply pointing out a drawback in her proposal, that is all.

Pandora's box has been open for a long while on that one.

Two people can come to the country illegally, pop out a kid, and wala - instant US citizen!

We'll even pay all the expenses for the birth and neonatal care.
