Re: My impression of the GOP candidates so far....

I cannot see a single Repub candidate that has a chance in hell. Ron Paul is their best bet but he won't even break 1% in the primaries. The Democratic nominee should choose him as a running mate.

It makes me feel good to see you say that, given your certainty that Kerry would win.

Good, you talk about not letting one single thing leading to a general conclusion. Well, don't let his support for the Fair Tax leads you to think that Huckabee is some kind of fiscal conservative (if they even exist).

Huckabee mixes tax cut with tax/fees increase. But in the end, he increases spending. End of story. It's not one thing, it's a multiple of his governing practices sum up into a general conclusion - he increases spending and government. There's no reason to think he'd do a 180 degree once he's in the White House.

Sure, and Ill definetly have to check that out. Once Thompson jumps in he will probably be my favorite. For now, Im with Huckabee soley on his support for the Fair Tax.

I see I have still not lived that one down. However if these Rove emails in Greg Palast's posession are genuine I'll turn out to be correct

Given the anti-war sentiment of the country, that is 100% correct .

For any of the GOP candidates to have a chance, the country's mood needs to switch from being anti-war to pro-war, because in the eyes of most Americans, the GOP is the "kick military butt" party--this is true in spite of its bungling in Iraq.

And the only way to make the country pro-war again is to create the state of fear that resulted immediately after 9/11, and the only way to do that is to arrange/allow another 9/11-style attack in the US.

The 2008 election is simple. If 9/11-style attack, US Pres=Guiliani. Without 9/11-style attack, US Pres=Clinton

IMHO, they'll both suck.

Unfortunately, most Americans don't care about the Constitution.

Face it, Ron Paul is being touted primarily by DEMOCRATS, and because he is anti-war. This is temporarily enough to overlook his very libertarian ideas on other things.

I was not concerned with whether Rudy would be liked/not liked or nominated/not nominated had he served as a senator. I was not talking about winning favors within the GOP.

I was only saying he should not be considered a serious presidential candidate until he shows he can govern/lead a higher post - a post in the Senate or the governorship for example.

I say that to highlight the point that I think promoting a mayor to the presidency is like promoting your branch manager to be the CEO. It's too big a step regardless of how competent that person was as a manager.

Thompson isn't presidential material - he's a no-show on th floor, who likes the role of senator. He's another Bush - and that's the last thing we want. What is this repub fascination with media celebrities - Reagan, Ahnold, now Thompson? Check his record - very little legislation and a lot of missed votes.

I like him because I agree with him, and because he doesnt like politics. He seems like someone who will do what he thinks is right, rather than pander. Youre also wrong that he likes the role of a Senator. Hes said plenty of times he hated it.
