Fair Tax Coverage at the Republican Debate
YouTube - ABC News Republican Debate from Iowa - Part 5
Great to see that this issue is really gaining momentum. It is now showing up at all campaign forums, has a record number of sponsors in congress, and is being supported by many Presidential candiates, D and R. Will it have an impact on voting? Probably very little. I for one am not casting a vote for anyone who does not pledge to work to pass it.

Re: Fair Tax Coverage at the Republican Debate
This debate has been with us for decades, and I'm certain that it will be going on for many more to come. This debate is meaningless without addressing what our taxes are being spent on.
I certainly don't think low income families who are tax exempt would consider the "fair tax" very fair. You want to reduce or eliminate income taxes, we're going to have to reinstitute our tariff system; we're also going to have to take the "industry" out of defense. Just think, without the "military industrial complex" we wouldn't be in Iraq.

And yes, low income families would think the fair tax is fair because like everyone, they get a prebate for the taxes paid on spending up to the level of poverty. They also pay no tax on used goods, including houses, and they recieve their entire pay check, with no taxes taken out. Their effective tax rate is 0. Then there are many other benefits. Side effects such as job creation, lower consumer prices, not needing to file tax returns, etc.

Re: Fair Tax Coverage at the Republican Debate
We've got three candidates supporting it: Huckabee, Tancredo, and Gravel.
Huckabee is the only one of those three that has a shot at actually winning the Presidency, so Fairtax supporters should give him a long look. |

I would probably vote for him in the General. Beyond the Fair Tax even he is a candidate I agree with.

I think there are too many ways to game a sales tax only system, for people to completely avoid paying any taxes--at least as I've heard it described to me.

There are already a myriad of ways to defraud the government with respect to income tax...can you imagine how many arguments there would be against the current system if you were starting from scratch and hearing pros and cons of both systems. BTW thanks for the link. |

Re: Fair Tax Coverage at the Republican Debate
There were. It required no small amount of lies and subterfuge to get the 16th amendment passed.
And I'm not referring to the conspiracy theories about this or that state not ratifying. I'm refering to the Big Lie told by the income tax supporters that the tax would only be 5% and it would only apply to the rich and that there would be no invasions of financial privacy to enforce it. |
