“Thanks for the question, you little jerk … you’re drafted.”

“Thanks for the question, you little jerk … you’re drafted.”

Quote:
PORTSMOUTH, New Hampshire (CNN) – Sen. John McCain’s visit to Concord High School proved to be more than your average guest speaker appearance Tuesday with the Republican presidential candidate giving and getting a dose of the campaign’s trademark “straight talk.”

During the question and answer session one student rose and asked a pointed question about McCain’s age: “If elected, you’d be older than Ronald Reagan, making you the oldest president. Do you ever worry that like you might die in office or get Alzheimer’s or some other disease that might affect your judgment?”

The Arizona senator chuckled slightly as the “oh my gods” filled the room. In a self-deprecating reference to his memory, McCain said his children have joked about their father “hiding his own Easter eggs,” but quickly added, that he was a “24-7” worker and would out campaign any of his rivals.

McCain then ended the exchange in his quintessential style: “Thanks for the question, you little jerk … you’re drafted.”
I'm straining to find the humor in Sen John McCain's retort to this High School student.
Is this the style and temperment the American people want in a Leader ?
Was this John McCain's Maccaca moment ?

wow. it might be if the question weren't so tactless.

i tell you, i squirm whenever i hear people bring up mccain’s POW history. it sounds like it was such an ordeal and these characters on the sunday talk shows are always asking about it like it was some weekend trip he took four decades ago. that said, he has to deal with so many rude questions about that it’s funny he didn’t handle this one with more aplomb.

Oh Holy Shit.

He was clearly responding in a light-hearted way, evidenced by his comment about his children.

I swear, some people just need to lighten the fuck up and stop reading so much into everything...

well, i’d have to hear the original to know for sure but you have to be smiling pretty widely to call someone a “little jerk” to their face and have it come off as a joke. particularly when he’s in his teens and youre a powerful 70-year-old politician. but maybe...

Yes, as lighthearted as then. That song parody has been around for quite some time.

Re: “Thanks for the question, you little jerk … you’re drafted.”

The real question is "How come a high school student asked McCain the most relevant question of all about his campaign before anyone in the so called "professional media" did?"

I'm disappointed in McCain's response. It was quite a reasonable question and one that I'm sure, if he became the GOP nominee, would be an issue in the general election ... and quite rightly so. At an age where many are questioning the ability of people in their late 70s and beyond to drive a car, surely the same questions and more need to be applied to the US President?

His response though implied that being a member of the services is a punishment and is actually something derogatory to the services. I suspect though that what McCain was attempting was to replicate Reagan's humourous response to Walter Mondale re the same question ... but he bombed miserably. Still, the upside is that McCain's campaign is at least in the news this week, LOL

meh, having seen it it doesn't seem like that big a deal. and that's true, it IS a good question, but it wasn't particularly well-asked...

Apparently, his usage of that term was meant to be endearing.
I think it was a crass statement, disjointed from today's society.
Just because his calling a student a 'little jerk" wasn't done in anger shouldn't negate the sentiment behind the comment.

How else should this student take McCain's calling him ": an annoyingly stupid or foolish person
: an unlikable person; especially : one who is cruel, rude, or small-minded"

Are we to believe John McCain does not know the meaning behind the words he utters?

Sorta like Maccaca ?
