Do you donate money to Presidential campaigns?

Do you support Presidential campaigns financially?

Re: Do you donate money to Presidential campaigns?

I've never even thought of donating to a candidate before, but as many of you may already know, I've been completely seduced by Ron Paul's message of freedom, prosperity, and peace.

I'll try to keep this short.

I've been mostly a liberal all my life, but with a conservative and libertarian streak on a few issues. A year ago I was hoping Al Gore would join the race. That never happened. I liked Obama, then I liked Edwards, and I liked Hillary until she started to change her positions on foreign policy over the last half year or so.

I grew tired of the Democrats and have felt increasingly over the last couple of years that the system is broken, and that twisted ideologies about foreign policy have overtaken both parties. Common sense and logic have been left behind and in it's place we've got two parties that love to spend, and love to control our lives. They each want to legislate their own tastes on us and it has only divided us even more.

Look at the atmosphere around here. We attack each other with zeal. It's like our leaders want us to be fighting so that we won't band together and take our country back.

Enter Ron Paul.

I don't agree with him on everything, but he's the first politician probably in my lifetime that I can remember who treats me like an adult, gives it to us straight, isn't making huge promises that he knows he wouldn't be able to keep. The establishment is afraid of him because Americans have been conditioned these last few decades to believe that there is always an existential threat out there lurking to get us.

Ron Paul refreshed my view and helped me come around to the fact that we should not be living in fear, reacting out of fear. We ought to lead by setting good examples. I like what he has to say about monetary policy, fiscal restraint, and individual liberty and self-reliance.

I just about gave up on politics recently because it's ruled by narrow minds, and then came this very wise man who speaks assertively with passion.

So on November 5th I gave $100; we raised $4.3 million that day, a new online record.

And then I gave another $200 on December 16 when us Ron Paul "spammers" shattered every one-day record ever and took in $6 million. So now, while many of the other candidates are very wait and see about advertising in the 20 states on Feb. 5, Ron Paul is starting a ground game there and placing ads there.

He may not win, but Ron Paul remains the only candidate on either side with principled integrity and a record that backs it up.

I think that suitable gifts might be more , well....personal.....than cash. You know, like an Israeli flag for Guiliani, a personalised bomb-sight for McCain, that sort of thing.

All politicians consider cash, and I'm not referring to campaign donations, the ultimate in personal gifts. Also popular are board memberships, trustee positions for family members, partnership positions in developments at least five blind corporate layers down and 'old reliable', the use of private jet aircraft.

Re: Do you donate money to Presidential campaigns?

I have contributed financially to political campaigns in my home country, but would not consider doing it in any campaign abroad. Thus, no contribution to any presidential campaign. If I were a US citizen, I probably would, though.

Re: Do you donate money to Presidential campaigns?

I have never (there are no honest Canadian politicians). I thought about finding a way to donate to Ron Paul through an intermediate but opted out because I wanted to respect the nature of the US campaign laws that don't let foreigners give money. Ron Paul is the only politician I've ever seen that I would consider giving my money to. He's the only one that deserves it. Like Jason I've been rooting for Democrats since I've been into politics but Paul is unlike any other. Even of there are some social disagreements, they just seem so irrelevant compared to other things.

I'm truly interested:

If you're a Canadian, why do you have an American flag in your profile, and why is it so much bigger than your own country's flag??

Re: Do you donate money to Presidential campaigns?

No. I don't have a lot of spare money right now, and none of it will be going into the campaigns.

I donate to local candidates. They are the ones who need the money.

I love the USA and wanted to show my solidarity with my American brothers and sisters by also having an American flag. The sizes don't seem to be customizable or I would have made them equal. I put the Canada first though

Thank you for asking.

Re: Do you donate money to Presidential campaigns?

I make a tax deductible contribution every year. In non presidential elections, I spread my donation around to 2 or three candidates but almost always keep it in the state or local (Example - I gave to AHHNOLD's campaign a few years ago - last year I gave to our California state representative -Cameron Smythe and our House of Representative - Buck McKeon. I know both of these guys - we live in the same neighborhood). When the Presidential election cycle starts, I usually give 100% of my donation to one candidate. I haven't decided who that will be this year, but am leaning towards McCain, Thompson or Romney.

PS - IMHO, Romney was very impressive in the debate Sunday.

PPS - I donate more than $1000.00
