Heard on the news this morning that recent polls show that more people are concerned with the US economy than they are with the war in Iraq. Is this a suggestion that American voters are resigned to the fact that, regardless of who wins in November, we're not getting out of Iraq anytime soon?

I am not surprised….we have a phenomenal capacity for self. In ww2, due to the depression etc. the newly found work and wealth, my grandfather heard people say if the war lasted longer so what, they were making a mint.

I think it was Galbraith who remarked on it first; the juxtaposition regarding a country that actually increases its standard of living directly due to war and immediately there after in large part economically because of such and its ability to comprehend that and truly understand the destruction of war itself.

Not having suffered a war here since 1865, and was nothing like the slogging matches of ww’s 1/2, we are to an extent disconnected.

It is more of a function of the fact that similar economic news brings disparate coverage depending on whether a GOP or a Dem is in office.

Only during a GOP administration would, say, news coverage of "unemployment" be prolific with rates at or below 5%. During a leftist administration, such a percentage would be referred to as "full employment". Hell, even when they admit the % is fine, they have to throw a barb about the kinds of jobs, etc...

Tired of the MSM and its fucked up agenda. Makes me want to retreat into my own little castle declaring, "Don't care what they report. Everything is fine with my family. Fuck everybody else." Hey...it's their fault I am encouraged to feel this way.

"Compassionate Conservatism"?!?! That is a stupid phrase. Conservatism is inherently compassionate. It is liberalism that is cruel for the sake of maintaining a constituency.

I think it's much simpler than that....

Americans care more about their own wallet than a war in the Middle East waged on Chinese money. If everything were peachy with the Economy, Iraq would still be the #1 issue.


Iraq affects almost noone personally, but the economy affects everyone. There's absolutly no surprise that the economy is the top issue for voters.

The issue is that the war in Iraq doesn't affect people directly. The rising cost of milk, bread, and gas do affect people directly. Don't worry though, most Americans are too stupid to make the connection that the war in Iraq is in part affecting their daily lives.
