Obama playing the race card.

Quote:
Obama says Republicans will use race to stoke fear By Caren Bohan
Fri Jun 20, 7:19 PM ET

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Reuters) - Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama said on Friday he expects Republicans to highlight the fact that he is black as part of an effort to make voters afraid of him.

"It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to run on their stewardship of the economy or their outstanding foreign policy," Obama told a fundraiser in Jacksonville, Florida. "We know what kind of campaign they're going to run. They're going to try to make you afraid.

"They're going to try to make you afraid of me. He's young and inexperienced and he's got a funny name. And did I mention he's black?"

He said he was also set for Republicans to say "he's got a feisty wife," in trying to attack his wife Michelle.

"We know the strategy because they've already shown their cards. Ultimately I think the American people recognize that old stuff hasn't moved us forward. That old stuff just divides us," he said.

Obama, born to a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya, has cast himself as a candidate who can bridge divides within the country, including those involving race.

It has been rare for him to bring up the topic during his presidential bid. In March he gave a widely praised speech on the subject after receiving criticism over racially charged comments by his longtime pastor.

Obama, who faces Republican John McCain in the November election, would be the first black U.S. president.

Saying the republicans are going to use it yet what does he do in the same speech? Use the race card.

He must have been playing very close attention to his preacher for the last 20 years because he sounds just like him.

What exactly does "using the race card" mean?

Re: Obama playing the race card.

the race card was played by the Clintons...thats old news, but I am sorry to see here that Obama is basically playing the game that he said he was adverse too and here to fore comments regards keeping race out of it....kind of like saying the rep. 527 need to be fought so I am reneging on my promise to use fed. Election funds to fight them while moveon has ads already out there mischaracterizing McCain, 100 years etc etc etc...its base stinky politics....as I said and many said months ago, as time goes on he will be revealed as nothing more than part of the status quo and float back down to earth, the key is, will his early bandwagon adherents care? Recognizing that you were wrong, or not so much wrong but mislead is a hard insight for some............

and LS has a point in that, he is accusing the rep.s in advance of using race, and thos will go quietly inot the night, where in if lets say, a McCain operative not even mccain himself alluded to a 93% black voter roll for obama and said its probably race based voting he'd be drummed out by the media, w both know it as we have seen articles making that accusation regards “lower class”, “ non edumacated” voters in W Virg. et al doing same...it all depends on what side of the identity politics you are making claims from, we know where the media stands. Blacks are allowed to make these comments and connections, whites are not.

Re: Obama playing the race card.

The whole offset Republican fear attacks was a good idea, he just destroyed his argument when he mentioned race. There are plenty of potential Republican attacks he can try to deflect, he didn't need to bring race into it as using that tactic is a double edged sword for the Republicans. Sure, it might scare those who were racist, but then it'll put off a lot of people who will claim McCain and the Republicans are being racist. The last thing you need in this politically correct society is to be called a racist, so I don't see it being brought up as a tactic by the right.

Since neither one of them can really do squat regards 527 ads, his statement was stupid, it created angst where in none was present and neither can do anything about. The reps would never touch the race thing with a 10 foot poll, he made a mistake as you alluded, I agree.

Re: Obama playing the race card.

The only way Obama could avoid "playing the race card" is to campaign in white-face. The mere fact that he is black means that race will be an issue. The McCain campaign won't directly make it one, but independent supporters will. For Obama to predict this is on the same level as his predicting the sun will rise tomorrow: not exactly a tribute to his prophetic ability, but hardly anything to get excited about, either.

Stop playing the racists-in-your-background card.
