But Franken isn't funny. Doesn't that mean that his stuff doesn't work and bring into question his understanding of current events?

I'm from Illinois. It's not omitted intentionally... and I routinely poke fun of my state and am proud of it at the same time.

So far, my joke has gotten no laughs. I guess that precludes me from running for office in the same vein as Stephen Colbert and Al Franken.

Well it seems to be a gaff so that qualifies you...if you were to throw a dog/puppy off a cliff i'd probably be more supportive of a possible future candidacy....

"Rush Limbaugh is a big fat Idiot and other observations" is one of the most entertaining and informative books I ever read, And "Lies and the Lying Liars that Tell Them" is equally brilliant.
"Why Not Me?" got a little tedious, and the Stuart Smalley stuff leaves me bored, but then again they can't all be gems.

Re: MN Senate Race - Coleman v. Franken

I shouldn't really advocate it per se as i believe even having a cliff in IL is illegal these days but i'm partial to anything that isn't an alsation or bull dog. Poodles, chewawas, setters, cocker spaniels etc. They're all good for me, i may even donate to your campaign!

(Btw i sure am glad folks don't judge for your junior Senator...)

Seriously, what's wrong with a comedian? A satirist like Franken needs to have a deep understanding of current events and the American culture to make his material work. Then he needs command of the language, and an appreciation for subtle nuance. And then he needs to precisely communicate his vision to the audience.
Sort of an Anti-Bush.
Right on goober! I'm rooting for him!

Re: MN Senate Race - Coleman v. Franken

I think Al Franken is pretty funny. What works for him is that he remembers that funny works best if you're holding power to account. What makes Dennis Miller so unfunny now is that he tries to be funny and defend the powerful. For whatever reason, comedy just doesn't work that second way. Bill Maher can be really, really funny sometimes, and he can also make you think. Anyone who really knows him knows that he's conservative about some issues, liberal about others, and libertarian about others. People forget that Maher voted for Bob Dole, and then Nader in the next election, and then Kerry in the one after that.

The more people write Franken off as a joke, the more it will probably bring him more attention. He's already getting a lot of attention, and the state he's running could be a huge "get" for Obama, who beat Clinton there. If Franken really were a joke, he wouldn't be this close in the polls.

Re: MN Senate Race - Coleman v. Franken

Al Franken is an emotional basket case. If I lived in Minnesota, there is no way I would vote for one who has so little control of their emotions, regardless of their party.

Re: MN Senate Race - Coleman v. Franken

I don't have any information about Franken being an emotional basket case or having little control of his emotions. Do you have any examples?
