Well after a string of nonsensical stuff from McCain since he has won the votes needed for the nomination and to prioritise, what is the reason you don't like him?

Its a multi-select poll, so check whatever box you have issues with him on and prioritise it to some extent i guess...but not so much you see as the"most" important, but what you see as important.

Now i have thought long and hard over certain issues and have come up with as many of the reasons i can think of, but if i have forgotten any please also select the other option and list it below explainning.

I have made it a pubic options poll btw incase it gets stacked by idiots, it'll still be possible to calculate who, as a real conservative, has what specific gripes with him.

Wow there sure are a lot of reasons to dislike him! And some of them are pretty wacky! Like his opposition to torture!?! Meanwhile he doesn't really oppose torture. He voted against the ban on torture, didn't he....So all you torture lovers out there can rest easy. McCain is pro-torture, even after having been tortured himself.

Well i did leave an option for pandering and flip flopping, but where did i mention torture anywhere?

One thing that has shocked me about conservatives this year is how rigidly dogmatic they are about making sure that any candidate always toes the party line in order to get their support. I can't think of a single candidate that has ever been in line with my own stances on the issues as much as many conservatives expect republican candidates to be. Is there no room for independent individual thought? On the left is only seems to be the fringe that is that hard core about expecting extreme ideology but on the right it is quite common it seems.

I'm glad you said "on the right". As he is more in line with my views and as he is the nominee, I think he does represent to majority of the GOP and the GOP has the hardcore RR which is a pretty rigid group. So, as you referred to the hardcore on the left being the same, I think both parties have their rigid groups that are rarely pleased with anyone.

Yeah independant thought is one thing, McCain though is just a thorn in the party.

With the option for the 2000 race i would wanna add in, his general hunderance of Bush since. (100 charachter limit on poll options).

Given that you'd be hard pressed to call Bush a "conservative", I would think that hindering Bush would be more of a plus in conservative circles than a minus.

I agree but I think it's a larger percentage of those on the right. I think the reason that left wing talk radio isn't as successful is because there just are not as many knee jerk lefties. I find candidates that are willing to take each issue on it's own and try to work towards a solution rather than sticking with the party platform no matter how things look in application to be refreshing in either party.

How is he a thorn? The biggest grip I can see from most is that he doesn't adopt the party platform as his own across the board. And it seems to me that the more a candidate is willing to break with Bush the better their chances of winning at this point.

I was waiting until you'd get in! Btw seeing as you hate liberal poicies more than most and see yourself as a conservative i guess you' be voting in this then?

It seems to me that anyone on the federal level that is not addressing 4 issues is really either missing the boat, or trying to avoid dealing with the reality of the USA, and a nation in general;

1) making sure all in the nation have food
2) making sure all in the nation have shelter
3) making sure all in the nation have medical care
4) making sure all in the nation have education

Let's face it, those are not sexy topics, but they are really the 4 basics. We can overlook a military to defend ourselves from invasion, and a legal system, since although they are not perfect, the USA has addressed them... and I don't want people to get off of doing military or legal reform to fine tune those two items as a way to avoid dealing with the 4 items above we need a great deal of work on.

I don't see how McCain addresses any of the 4 items above. And if he ever mentions them, he mentions some old useless slogans with regards to them. I don't see the 4 areas above becoming signifigantly better with McCain as a president.

McCain won't win distancing himself from Bush, no way.

As for being a thorn, well if a candidate had one or two reasons out of that list, maybe a handful, even scraping double digits is not that bad, with this guy, i can name 30 reasons off the top of my head.

He's not a conservative.

I see myself as a "Classic Liberal" and would likely agree with most of the GOP platform from 30 years ago or so. However, these days the GOP is pretty much FUBAR in light of that platform. I don't really identify myself as "conservative" or "liberal" in the US political discussion of today, since both parties espouse things that I dislike and like.

I could go through and find things I dislike about McCain, but I'm not really a line-toting "conservative", so I don't want to throw off your poll.
