Democrats Adjourn Congress, Republicans Stay and Work

This is an interesting story going on, in which Pelosi seems to be acting like a dictator, refusing to allow debate on offshore drilling, and adjouring the House early on a friday while there were still issues to be addressed. No appropriations bills have been passed, no legislation on addressing energy issues have been considered. Even with the lights out and cameras off, some Republican House members have stayed to debate amongst themselves and invited tourists down to the chambers to join them. I have to wonder what gives Pelosi such power to ignore the wishes of 40% of the House. This would be an interesting topic to ask Obama and McCain. As President how would they address the democratic majorities totalitarian activities?

The Crypt: House Republicans go back on the floor Monday to talk gas prices - Politico.com

Quote:
Continuing with their guerilla tactics from last week, House Republicans will be back on the floor Monday to talk gas prices, even though Congress is in recess, and they may stay there all week.

More than a dozen Republicans have already committed to make appearances, according to House GOP leadership aide, including National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole (Okla.).

Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) and Mike Pence (R-Ind.), who led Friday's five-hour talkathon after the House shut down for the August recess, are also expected to be there, according to this aide.

I have to admit I don't care much for political theatre.

Yeah, I was wondering why no one else had posted. Obviously its a political stunt by the GOP, but its a symptom of something more, which is Pelosi's totalitarian operation. I have to wonder why the minority doesnt have more power to overcome the majority.

Like when the dems could not even call their meetings "hearings" and had to take testimony in the basement cause the reps would not allow them to hold real hearings?

There was very little coverage of what was going on the House floor Friday.

Others are talking about just holding the Vote up or down but to go on record with the vote.

I sent an email to Pelosi on Saturday and received this.

And the email address that she sent for me to write to does not even work.

There are any number of blogs and forums that are talking about this... but here.... there really must be a large number of Pelosi drones here.

I'm actually quite happy they've gone away for a break, nothing else they can screw up as a collective unit when they're out of session.

Re: Democrats Adjourn Congress, Republicans Stay and Work

Pelosi and the Democrats have pushed alternatives to more drilling, including pointing out that oil companies already have control of 68 million acres of federal land and need to search for oil there first. Democrats are also pushing renewable fuels and conservation, and they're calling on President Bush to release 700 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

She would say no to off shore drill because it would not do any thing to lower prices, but she would call on the President to release 700 million from the SPR..... what a fraken laugh... we have seen that happen before with little move in price...

I hold both the democratic and republican sides accountable for not getting any damn thing done. It's hard to pick sides and say that one side is more culpable than the other when they're all acting like children.

maybe if the conservative party tried a bit harder just a few short years ago, they could have kept control and the part time jobs its members all had.

So, you agree that what the Democrats are doing is wrong, or that its right because the GOP did it?

Their job is to debate and vote. They remained in the House and debated the issue. I should have said "attempted to stay and work". Youre right. Its difficult to continue working, when the boss turns off the lights.

When Clinton released oil from the SPR in 2000, it had an immediate effect on the speculators. Oil prices declined almost immediately, although they resumed their upward trajectory shortly thereafter

I agree that the majority controls the agenda, and that the reps are getting the courtesy that the dems were given.

Since when did we decide that adjourning Congress was a totalitarian act? Does this also apply to other governing bodies? Are all Chairpersons now facists?
