4 Nov 2008 - "Fire the incumbents day"

One wonders what would happen if the American people were to send a clear message to the Congress by firing the entire House and 1/3 of the Senate 4 1/2 weeks from now?

Of course, this is not likely to happen, but it would be interesting....

Re: 4 Nov 2008 - "Fire the incumbents day"

It might.
They will allow the FED to bankrupt America to avoid it of course...by election day the $700 bn will almost be gone and the economy is likely to be worse than now.
I am sure I am not alone in noticing that even the most ardent coach potato American is pissed off right now... actually getting off their self-absorbed ass and voting however remains to be seen.

This is about as close to a revolution as can practically be done in modern America.

With the absolute dysfunction of government over that last few years. I'd say it's in order.

I'd be satisfied in large measure if house and senate elect their own more competent congressional leaders from among the ones we choose.

The only hope of this happening is it's being so close to the election. Usually things are calm by election day and people forget.

Hopefully not this time

It isn't going to happen. The ratio of incumbents winning to their opponents is something like 10 consistently. Even where I live people would say they hate congress but vote in the same senators and representatives every. My representative is unchallenged and McConnel is ahead in the polls in the Senate.

Well, it would do the Republicans a favor.

I don't care whom wins and loses at this point in DC, because inevitably we are the losers and until, the incumbents are made to feel that their gerrymandering and other slimy machinations won’t keep them in office consistently.

I consider myself a history junkie, and I am really hard pressed to find another situation in which we have been more ill served than now.

I agree.
During the Grant administration is the nearest I can think of.

McConnel's only just up though...i mean for the party leader, from KY, as a Republican, 8 points isn't a lot! But you're right, that healthcare guy is a moron...

Perhaps. IMHO, the status quo is worse.

Our Congressional representation needs a bitter reminder of who they work for.

I don't disagree, really, but I'm cynical enough to say that since their replacements would just be the schmuck from the other party, then not much would change.

Americans are outraged over this bail-out. In the first place our government should have NEVER stuck their fingers in the private sector. They got involved in the mortgage loan business to insure minorities & lower income people could acquire homeownership. Then the Clinton adminstration in 1999lowering credit & income standards to get more of these people into homes. Now we're stuck with the bill.

What ever happened to personal responsibility? People who bought homes, way above their pay grade--knowing that there were risks involved.

I agree--they all should be canned. They ignored warning after warning. I cannot believe Barney Franks & Criss Dodd are still in their seats! Franklin Rienes, appointee of the Clinton administration of Fannie/Freddie walked away with 90 MILLION dollars in yearly bonuses. Then he showed up in the Obama campaign as an economic advisor.

NOTE--They have announced that they will not have an investigation until after the election. Why? Because this financial disaster lays at the feet of democrats, & they do not want to expose themselves until after the election.

WE CAN ALL DO SOMETHING! Become a member of Citizens against government waste. It's easy, it's free--& at least we can let our government know we're looking over their shoulder.

I did a little digging and all I could find is that indeed a woman named Heather Ryan is running but I haven't heard any coverage of her anywhere.

The entire House isn't up for re-election, only like 20 or so of them are, so the revolution will have to wait until 2010, when the House will probably swing back into Republican control. It's just the way Americans like it; gridlock. Never let the same team control everything for too long or you end up with the sky falling.
