Only 1/5 of America sees itself as Republican

Quote:
The latest Washington Post-ABC News poll shows the depth of the party's problems. Just 21 percent of those surveyed identified themselves as Republicans.. . .Republicans have slid steadily to their present state of affairs. It's just not as cool to be a Republican as it once was.

Specter's Departure a Wake Up Call for GOP | 44 | washingtonpost.com
And that last sentence says it all--American politics is all about image, and the image of the GOP is "war-mongering, gay-bashing, anti-abortion Scrooge." The majority of Americans have always hated the Scrooge part, but for years they loved the war-mongering, gay-bashing, and anti-abortion parts. But Bush switched the country into Vietnam mode, so war-mongering lost its popularity, and homophobia is quickly going out of style, while the Pro-Life movement's actual position--"begins at conception, ends at birth"--is becoming increasingly apparent.

In a nutshell "Pro-Life, help the rich, nuke the Arabs, and kill all the f--s" is no longer cool.

I'm wondering when it was ever 'cool' to be a Republican.

I would say that some of the Republican kids I know are Republican in a grand part to be counter-counter-culture.

As well as plenty of the liberals that I know being leftist to be non-conformists etc.

Ditto here. Funny how things turn around, isn't it?

Although, in my experience, it should more be "The Libertarian Counter-Culture." College Republicans are surprisingly pro-gay and pro-drug...at least at my school.

Shouldn't be surprising. I think that the gay thing is way generational, and the drug thing is youth (and or generational).

Good observation about the libertarianism, though.

Spector left because he is far to the left of his constituency.

I voted for Jim Tadisco on the Conservative party line for the same reason.

edit: fingure slipped on the spell check button.

Anyway I still believe most Americans have conservative values. They just are easily manipulated.

When every religion on the planet basically agrees with the few religious issues that have become political ones, how can that be considered a mistake.

Re: Only 1/5 of America sees itself as Republican

I've never been a republican but I dont vote otherwise in national offices as the dem alternatives have alwayes proven to be unacceptable.

Claiming party affiliation is sheep behavior. No wonder its more popular among dems.

Im going to save this and read it back to you when Republicans win again in the future. It wasnt but 4 years ago when Democrats were going extinct. Things change. Fact is 60million people voted republican in the last election, the only poll that matters. Nothing has changed since then except that Obama has exposed liberalism to the general populace, something they have tried to hide forever.

From your own link:

Quote:
That's the lowest since the fall of 1983, when just 19 percent identified themselves as Republicans.
The same republicans who won major elections in 1984, 1988, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004?

And to further drive a nail in your argument.

Quote:
In fact, there has been no change in national partisanship since the last quarter of 2008, when 35% of Americans identified as Democrats, 28% as Republicans, and 35% as independents. That means the Democratic Party's advantage has neither expanded nor contracted since Barack Obama took office and began to pursue a largely Democratic legislative agenda.
